“He’s had his entire life to prepare for this- it should have been enough. He knew he was a tithe from the time he was little. ‘You’re special,’ his parents always told him. ‘Your life will be to serve God and mankind.’ He doesn’t remember how old he was when he found out exactly what that meant for him” (Shusterman 31). This quote emphasizes that a tithe like Lev is predestined to a life of service to society. Lev’s case is different from the others because he is being unwound due to his religion. Lev’s family keeps telling him that he is special to avoid the fact that they set their child up to die. I feel that the government brainwashes these people so that they think this is justified. The children have no idea they are unwanted until they get older and figure it out for themselves; however, up until then, their families tell them they are specialized for the unwinding. The children get so caught up in the words of their parents that they start to think the unwinding must happen.

“The thought of it still frightens him, but these days of not knowing what the next hour will bring- that is truly terrifying. Being torn from his purpose was the most unnerving thing that has ever happened to Lev, but now he understands why God let it happen. It’s a lesson. It’s to show Lev what happens to children who shrink their destiny: They become lost in every possible way” (Shusterman 77). Lev realizes that he can escape his unwinding. He struggles to let himself be free from what he has always been told. Connor and Risa kidnapping Lev on the way to his unwinding was the best thing that could have happened. Lev’s pastor even agrees that life will be so much more meaningful if he fights for his dignity. All his life, Lev worried about what was next on the agenda for a tithe. He felt lost in his own life, never safe. Confusion and regret strike Lev when pulling the fire alarm in the school. Lev realizes he needs Connor and Risa, but they feel that Lev cannot be trusted. It only takes time for Lev to think that his ultimate purpose is to live.

“Unwinds didn’t go out with a bang- they didn’t even go out with a whimper. They went out with the silence of a candle flame pinched between two fingers” (Shusterman 95). People make the unwinds feel so special during their life; however, they are forgotten right after they are gone. It is unjustified to kill innocent kids based on their need to have recycled parts available. There is no remorse for their murder, and unwinds are forced to live a full life before they are just dust to their families and the world. Lev’s case is so wrong that due to his religion he is being unwound, but what kind of faith would want their people killed. Connor’s case is unlawful because one’s parents cannot see it best to unwind their troublesome kid. Risa’s case is wrong because they did not want to spend more money on her foster system. These people unwind kids based on the hassle the children bring.

“You unwinds are all the same. You think that because no one loves you, then you can’t love anyone” (Shusterman 108). The unwinds don’t want to get too comfortable with people in their life since they are prepared to die before they reach the peak of their life. Unwinds are given a bleak life to look forward to which is unjustified. They feel like they are incapable of love because they have been discarded to the side. , and they feel unwanted. The unwinds are stripped of their dignity and fundamental rights to love and feel a connection. The trauma of the future unwinding sets them back emotionally. Everyone knows the unwinds act this way on purpose, and no one does anything to change it.

“You got it in your heart to run from unwinding, ain't no one can tell you it’s the wrong thing to do, even if it’s against the law. The good Lord wouldn’t have put it in your heart if it wasn’t right” (Shusterman 121). This quote is based on morality that these unwinds do not deserve what is planned for them. They can run from their destiny and create a better one they deserve. God has a plan for the unwinds if they have faith in him to escape the evil. He put the message to flee in their heart for them to believe in and act accordingly. Not one person in that society can prove that unwinding is justified since they keep the procedures secret. The unwinds need to stick together if they plan to show their society what they are worth.

"If there wasn't unwinding, there'd be fewer surgeons and more doctors. If there wasn't unwinding, they'd go back to trying to cure diseases instead of just replacing stuff with someone else's" (Shusterman 169). Human rights stand out in this quote because the morality of the people performing the unwinding is not as bad compared to the families who set their kids up for it. The government tried to justify this by having a backup plan with spare body parts, but it would be better to focus on saving lives. It seems as if the backup plan is better than saving the lives of innocent children. These children should be treated with equal value to life instead of doctors giving up on the possibility of curing life. The fewer surgeons can be put towards research and progression of medicine.

"I don't know what happens to our consciousness when we're unwound. I don't even know when that consciousness starts. But I do know this. We have a right to our lives" (Shusterman 333). In their society, their minds are easily set on this injustice of unwinding. Those who are destined to be unwound probably struggle to wrap their heads on why they are set to die. These children are treated as disposable objects just like abortion in our society today. After children are born, they have their humanity, and their parents should not be the deciding factor over their right to life. One thing unwinds do know is that they deserve to rise above their society and race for a life that accepts them. These people do not put themselves in the shoes of the unwinds because if they did, the unwinding would be banned.
