... is a Dutch belittlement form of "Maria" and also used in mainly northern Germany. Maria means "gift of god" or "to be fertile"

In Germany there is no real name giving tradition for first names as far as I know. Often people give children second names after the names of close relatives or important friends.

from Lithuania

Rita is short form of MARGHERITA and other names ending in rita.

MARGHERITA - Italian form of MARGARET. This is also the Italian word for "daisy flower" (species Leucanthemum vulgare).

MARGARET - derived from Latin Margarita, which was from Greek μαργαριτης (margarites) meaning "pearl", probably ultimately a borrowing from Sanskrit मञ्यरी (manyari).

In Lithuania the ancient people believed that a name given to an infant could determine his fate. The meaning of the name given to the new member of society by the parents expressed their hopes and wishes. The name corresponded to the person, and human essence was expressed in it. Only in the thinking of modern man has the name become separated from the person...

Jeppe comes
from the biblical name Jacob. Jacob means “the one who holds the heel” – (in Hebrew
Yaacov – heel holder). Jacob and Esau were twin brothers and sons of Isak and
Rebekka. When Rebekka was giving birth Jacob was holding his brother’s heel on
the way out.

Jeppe is a
common name in Denmark. Most famous is Jeppe “on the hill” – a fictive character
from a play from 1722. A drunken peasant is place in the nobleman’s bed whilst
passed out. He is told he is the nobleman and then we follow his drunken
actions.
