         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Causes of the event.&nbsp;<br>When the United States used the atomic bomb on Japan, they did not inform Stalin that they would be using it. This created mistrust between the two countries. The country with the most powerful weapon was seen as the strongest and most powerful, this created competition between the two and to the start of the Arms Race.&nbsp;<br>2. What the event was.&nbsp;<br>Competition between the United States and the Soviet Union that is known as the biggest and most expensive arms race in history.<br>3. Dates of the event.<br>1949-1991<br>4. Key individuals, groups involved<br>Joseph Stalin, Soviet Union, United States<br>Was the event a victory for democracy or communism?<br>No one won<br>Brinkmanship- The willingness to go to the edge or brink of war.<br>Deterrence- Both the Soviet Union and the United states built a large amount of nuclear weapons.<br>Strategic Arms Limitations Talks (SALT I and SALT II)-</div><div>SALT I was first round of trying to reinforce limitations on nuclear weapons.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Break up of the Soviet Union<br>Cause(s) of the event</div><div><br>Gorbachev came to power and with him, he brought new ideas which were much different from previous ones. Gorbachev's involvement in Lithuania and the lack of economic progress he was making was not good for his reputation. Boris Yeltsin replaced Gorbachev. Although Gorbachev asked of other countries under the Soviet Union for unity, countries were becoming independent. The Soviet Union was falling apart.<br><br>A description of what the event was</div><div><br>Countries were becoming independent left and right. After the 13-day crisis, the United States and the Soviet Union compromised on an agreement. The US had to remove missiles from Turkey and Italy as well as promise to not invade Cuba, so that the Soviet Union removes the missiles from Cuba.</li><li>Date(s) of the event 1961</li><li>Key individuals/groups involved Nikita Khrushchev, John F.          <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>Cause(s) of the event During the Yalta Conference it was agreed to divide Germany into zones that will be controlled by the Allied military forces.</li><li>A description of what the event was - Germany was split into two sections (east and west). The split became known as the iron curtain. The Soviets controlled the eastern part as well as Berlin. The western zones became the Federal Republic of Germany.</li><li>Date(s) of the event 1949</li><li>Key individuals/groups involved Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, Franklin D.          <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>Cause(s) of the event - Even though there was free health care and education in the east, West Germany had higher salaries, had more consumer goods, and more personally freedom. This caused about 20% of the Eastern population to leave.</li><li>A description of what the event was - Since many wanted to leave the borders were closed and the expanding wall made it difficult to escape. Eventually a crowd assembled on the border and forced the guards to open the gates.
