When the United States used the atomic bomb on Japan, they did not inform Stalin that they would be using it. This created mistrust between the two countries. The country with the most powerful weapon was seen as the strongest and most powerful, this created competition between the two and to the start of the Arms Race.

Brinkmanship- The willingness to go to the edge or brink of war.
Deterrence- Both the Soviet Union and the United states built a large amount of nuclear weapons.
Strategic Arms Limitations Talks (SALT I and SALT II)-
SALT I was first round of trying to reinforce limitations on nuclear weapons. SALT II was the second round that focused on limiting and reducing the number of MIRVs (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle)
Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars)- A system that would detect and deflect nuclear weapons using x-ray lasers, which was proposed by President Reagan in 1983.

Cause(s) of the event

Gorbachev came to power and with him, he brought new ideas which were much different from previous ones. Gorbachev's involvement in Lithuania and the lack of economic progress he was making was not good for his reputation. Boris Yeltsin replaced Gorbachev. Although Gorbachev asked of other countries under the Soviet Union for unity, countries were becoming independent. The Soviet Union was falling apart.

A description of what the event was

Countries were becoming independent left and right. Without the other countries, the Soviet Union is only left as Russia.

  • Mao Zedong - Led the cultural revolution while being the president of China.

  1. Cause(s) of the event The United States tried to overthrow Cuba's new communist government so Cuba asked the Soviet Union for help. 
  2. A description of what the event was : The Soviet Union sent nuclear weapon's to Cuba as help. After the 13-day crisis, the United States and the Soviet Union compromised on an agreement. The US had to remove missiles from Turkey and Italy as well as promise to not invade Cuba, so that the Soviet Union removes the missiles from Cuba.

  • Cause(s) of the event During the Yalta Conference it was agreed to divide Germany into zones that will be controlled by the Allied military forces.
  • A description of what the event was - Germany was split into two sections (east and west). The split became known as the iron curtain. The Soviets controlled the eastern part as well as Berlin. The western zones became the Federal Republic of Germany.

    Iron Curtain - Winston Churchill's words to describe the divide of Europe.
    Marshall Plan - An assistance program meant to aid European countries after WWII.

  • Cause(s) of the event - Even though there was free health care and education in the east, West Germany had higher salaries, had more consumer goods, and more personally freedom. This caused about 20% of the Eastern population to leave.
  • A description of what the event was - Since many wanted to leave the borders were closed and the expanding wall made it difficult to escape. Eventually a crowd assembled on the border and forced the guards to open the gates. People then started destroying and tearing the wall down.

     Due to the Cold War and the fear of the Domino Effect, the US feared that if Vietnam becomes communist, so will the countries surrounding it. 
    A description of what the event was - 

    America fought along side ARVIN in order to stop the spread of communism in Vietnam. The war ended when US forces withdrew and Vietnam became communist.
