This courthouse is the one that all the cases went down in. Every accused witch was brought here to be forced to confess or die. The girls that accused the witch would act out in bursts or have tantrums. Sometimes they would all mimic exactly what the accused witch is doing or saying. This is what made these trials so convincing to the people of the town back then.

Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller is the person that wrote the play itself. He decided to write a play about the Salem witch trials because he was experiencing a modern version of it. During these times the U.S government was going crazy trying to find communists and accusing random people. Hollywood was the epicenter for people being accused and some of the people were Miller's friends. They questioned him and he pled the fifth which made him look suspicious. This caused no one to go see his play because he was a possible communist.

This lady on the picture below is named Tituba. She was a slave/servant for the reverent of the town. She would babysit his kids while he was working and because she was from the area of Morrongo and other countries around there, she knew how to do some voodoo things and showed the children. The children thought it was cool but knew at heart that it was wrong so they told their father. She was then accused of witch craft and sentenced to death.

A man named Giles Corey was accused of being a warlock or witch by the girls. If you confessed you just went to jail for being a witch but if you didn't you would die. Giles found the loophole of not saying anything so nothing would happen. Since he decided to do this they wanted to crush the confession out of him. They kept adding weight and he wouldn't say anything until his final words were "more weight" and he died.

Was the devil behind it all?

All of the Puritans that were apart of the Salem witch trials believed that the devil was behind all of it. The question is were they right? It's very possible that the people that believed this were right. Obviously we can't have any proof but from the stories passed down, all signs lead to yes rather than no. A more upcoming theory about the girls that were accusing people of being witches is that they weren't faking it but actually believed they were witches.
