Robert Walton writes a letter to his sister reporting a strange event, as he and his crew are bound by ice at sea and see a gigantic man seated in a sledge guiding some dogs, later after they have freed their boats. They encounter another man later in a similar sled almost dying, but before he is taken in he asks where they are going, after hearing that it was the northern pole he promptly embarks. After saving him he says, upon being asked that he was seeking one who fled him, soon the writer of the letters becomes friends with the stranger. 8 days later The man seems to have been recovering, with the increasing affection between Robert and his friend, the man of the sled decides to tell Walton a tale, but he loses his composure and has to be calmed down over a few hours but did not tell the tale that day. 6 days later The man after a short discourse says that his story will be told by him the next day Walton decides to make the tale a manuscript and of that comes the story of Frankenstein.

Frankenstein prepares himself to animate life; he checks everything to see if it’s perfect and starts, but the moment the thing he created is seen by him deeply disturbs him, so he runs away and sleeps, but has horrible nightmares. He is woken up by his creation seemingly trying to detain him, he runs to the courtyard and spends the night there in undeniable suffering. In the morning he starts walking with the only objective of getting away from the monster he created, in this path he finds Henry Clerval one his dearest friends, they talk about Victor’s family and friends and how Clerval came here to find Frankenstein. They go to the home of Victor and the creature has fled, but the scientist thinks he saw his creation and them and falls down in a fit, for several months Gervals treats him as he is appalled by a sickness that came with his scientific pursuit. Clerval informs Frankenstein of a letter sent to him by his cousin and the chapter ends.

The monster tells his tale, he says he woke up in darkness and lack of understanding and fled to find shade in a forest near Ingolstadt, he ate some berries and drank from the river, then he slept. Waking up at night he was surprised with the moon, he sought more berries and found a giant coat to cover himself from the cold, he was confused by the multitude of things he felt. As the day passed the giant man started to become accustomed to his senses and started to distinguish things from one another. He discovered fire and how to use it by a campfire left by some beggars, it burnt him once but provided heat and better food, however ailment was still scarce. The monster wandered to the mountains and found a hovel where he found a hut where a shepherd resided. The worker fled, but the giant man was still delighted with the hut, there he found fire and food which he devoured and then slept on some straw. In the morning he walked again for several hours until he reached a village, but the people of the village attacked him and then he fled, and in front of a cottage in which he stayed, desolated by his situation and humanity.

He did not dare enter the cottage in fear, but managed to find a loaf of bread and a cup to drink water, he saw a man but the man did not see him, the giant stayed warm in the proximity to the cottage’s chimney. Through a small fissure he saw a girl of a gentle nature, who worked with the man on the farm around the giant. Through a small crack he could now see the inside of the cottage, seeing a tidy but bare house were he saw and heard the girl sing and man play an instrument, something so beautiful that the monster could not even understand, after that the farm man and the girl prepared food and ate, the giant man observed with glee the contrast between the young woman and the farm man that was very old. The man played and the woman sang again, they read out loud and went to sleep, observing that the monster decided to rest.

He becomes much more depressed, and he blames himself for all of this situation, with the creation of the monster. He wanted to help people, to build life, not destroy it. He even thinks of suicide, however he couldn’t think about the fact of abandoning Elizabeth, his father and all of his family, especially with the monster out there.

The big man woke up on the straw he slept contemplating on the kindness of the people he was observing, but not daring to join them in fear. The young woman prepared the cottage and the food. The routine was the same as the last day. The young man and woman working and the old man that the monster perceived was blind contemplated and played his instrument. Sometimes the young men and women cried as if they were sad. With all their apparent luxury at least compared to the big man they did not have a reason to be sad and that confused him. He took some time to discover that the first cause was poverty and hunger. The monster sometimes cut wood for them at night. It surprised the villagers and made them happy. The big man discovered talk and words and was surprised and intrigued by it and was baffled every time he tried it. The monster learnt several words and names some he could not use. The narrator tells about how the youth were less cheerful than the old man who tried to cheer them aways. He then describes how they survived and tried to stay happy through poverty and want. The young man called Felix sometimes worked in the garden or in neighboring farms. He observes Felix reading to the old man and the young woman Agatha and starts to understand how it works through observation and thinking. The monster saw himself in a puddle and was horrified. As the summer came the situation of the farmers got better as Felix found more jobs and new plants sprouted. The narrator described that he observed them in the morning, slept, observed them again and if the night was illuminated by the moon he collected wood, cleared the snow and did the tasks he saw Felix doing. Narrator describes how he yearned to understand them and reveal himself to them, seeing them as superior beings. The big man started to practice language and found himself being able to speak outhough in an unrefined form. Spring came, turning everything more beautiful and wholesome and bringing hope to the monster who did not know what was coming for him.

In this chapter, the monster finished his tale and then asks Victor to creat a female version of him so that they can be “horrendous” together. He claims that this way he would be happy because he wouldn’t be alone, but Frankenstein refuses to attend to his wish. He then changes his mind, and says he will do it, changing it again later and concluding that he will create a female for the monster.

The monster tells Victor the story of the cottagers, the family he has been with, since he began listening and learning their language. The old man’s name was De Lacey, he was from a very noble family, and so were his children, Felix and Agatha, who had important positions in society. The source of all of their troubles came from Safie’s father, a merchant from Constantinople living in Paris, who was in prison accused of a crime he didn’t commit, but mostly due to his ethnicity, skin color, and religion. The French government then sent him to prison. Felix was in love with Safie, so he begins talking to her father through a window, and he promises the older man to get him out of there. If that happens, Safie’s father would allow the boy to have his daughter in marriage. Felix gets passports for everyone (himself, Agatha, De Lacey, Safie, and her father). He busts Safie’s father out of prison and they run away. De Lacey and Agatha go to Germany, but the other three stay together.
The French government discovers the plot, and Felix, Agatha, and De Lacey were exiled from France and had their fortunes confiscated. They lived in Germany, the location of the monster's discovery. The Turk attempted to force Safie to return to Constantinople, but she escaped with some money and information about Felix's whereabouts.

In this chapter, both Victor and Henry decide to spend the winter in the UK to visit England and Scottland. They first arrive in London, where they decide their plans. Their trip makes Henry happy. However, Victor tries to get the creature he created out of his head (since he was getting paranoid about the monster following them there) and focus on getting scientific information for himself. When they both get to Scottland, Victor tells Henry to continue his travel without him, so he could stop worrying about him. When Victor arrives at the Orkneys, islands of the Scottish coast, he rents a hut and begins to start a new project of creating a second living creature. The life on the island Victor was was difficult, with the few people living there having little resources only enough to sustain themselves, since these had to be brought from the mainland. With that, Victor continues his project, even though he feels sick and isolated from the rest of the world and does not wish to continue it.
