As we move into the 21st century, rapid technology changes, common core standards, political and social changes
are taking place at enormous speeds. The need for skilled teachers is becoming greater and greater. In order to address academic and social concerns, a group of classroom teachers developed the Responsive Classroom Approach as a way to teach social skills and academics throughout the school day and promote academic growth, in a safe school community. It's aim is to help children develop self-control, begin to understand what socially responsible behavior is, and come to value such behavior” (The Responsive Classroom Approach, 2014). The approach is geared towards using clear expectations, doesn’t rely on punishment or rewards and believes in natural consequence, in order to preserve the dignity of every child. Lora Hodges, executive director of Northeast Foundation for Children explains that We need teachers who engage all students, lift them to high levels of content mastery, provoke critical thinking and deep analysis, and coach students into becoming strong communicators and collaborators. This evaluation will examine the impact of Responsive Classroom, a school wide intervention designed to improve social and academic learning, in elementary schools and how staff implementin responsive classroom feel after the two week training process.
