When Tom is introduced, his description makes him seem like a very intimidating man. Nick knows Tom from college, and Tom is married to his cousin Daisy. Nick describes Tom as "those men who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one", which tells me he had his peak at a young age, and his life only goes downhill from there. Throughout this chapter the colors red and gold are mentioned a lot. I associate red with, power, blood, and anger; which I think resonates with Tom and his hunger for power and his need to be in control. I think gold is mentioned to represent the wealth of their family. So far I do not like Tom nor the way he treats Daisy.

New York city ( where myrtle's sister lives) filled with tons of plain buildings. The Valley of Ashes is the area between West Egg and New York. I believe that Jordan thinks just because she is wealthier than most people she is better than everyone else and is narcissistic. She is the type of person not to care about others problems strictly because it does not affect her. I think Nick and Gatsby will start being friends soon because Nick was the only real person that got invited to Gatsby's party. Then they got to talking and Nick did not know he was speaking to Gatsby

(which meant that he was part of the people who rigged the world series and is now being chased by the cops). If Gatsby is friends with a man like this is makes you question if he himself is tied into that criminal life especially after arranging a business meeting with him. Daisy and Gatsby had a relationship before Gatsby had to leave to the air force and I think it was super surprising because I didn't picture Gatsby being in love with a girl like Daisy, a woman that is ok with her husband having an affair, type of girl that was disappointed when her daughter was born, I personally could not picture Gatsby with a woman like that. I associate them both with Gatsby, him being a very wealthy man with all that green money, and him being a jealous guy when it comes to Daisy knowing she has a husband waiting at home for her that doesn't deserve her but she still stays. I think it was super cute that they slowly began getting comfortable with each other again. What I thought was quite sad, was the fact that Gatsby was using his house/money to impress Daisy, I think after all this time he should've just had a genuine time with her just catching up on life and trying to get that romance spark going again not showing off his house. To me it seemed like "Hey look how rich I've gotten since you've last seen me". Which is a good flex but not something you should do to try and get the girl. I thought it was super nice that Nick stood off to the side the entire time and let them have their moment (and basically was playing cupid) , a good wing man. He also said how he got rich from inheriting all his families money after they died but forgot to mention that his parents were poor farmers. He also mentioned that he spent his years building up his wealth but he had actually been working for the alcoholic man Cody. I think Daisy also loves Gatsby but also has these unsure feelings for Tom. I think she might be scared of change and is comfortable with her life with Tom. Tom does not love Daisy, he is also a bit comfortable with their life together that he'd rather just stay with her unhappily than divorce her and I think he hates the idea of her with another man, he's allowed to have women on the side and flirt and have a good time, but she isn't. Nick doesn't love anyone romantically but I think he's really into Jordyn. 

I think Fitzgerald is tryin to tell us that love is complicated, and messy, and sometimes comes at the wrong time. In this novel I relate most to Nick. Throughout this whole book Nick has stood back and watched everything happen, Tom's affair, Gatsby and Daisy's affair, the death of Myrle, he has been the character with the most inside scoop of everyone's lives. Like Nick, I had to watch my friend try and make a relationship work that we all knew was doomed or would just cause chaos. Neither Nick nor I tried stopping either of them, we actually encouraged it, because they are our friends, but we let them make their own mistakes and just stood off and supported them all the way through. Nick took care and stayed by Gatsby even after his death the same way that I have been there for my friend after the break up. Though I also relate to Gatsby with the obsession with trying to repeat the past. In our society today the American Dream can be interpreted in many different ways because each person has their different views on what they believe the American Dream should be. In the novel Gatsby's American Dream was getting the girl. Gatsby spent the majority of his life becoming rich, buying the fanciest clothes, throwing big parties, all for Daisy. So obsessed he even bought a house with a dock that has a view of her house. Even after all that he didn't get the girl. I believe many people live their life chasing after one thing their entire life, they let their life pass them by for a boy, for money, popularity, revenge, and I think its so sad. I think the author is trying to tell us that there is no real "American Dream" there is just life, and how you choose to live it. I think its ok to have goals, but don't waste your entire life to achieve something that is not even guaranteed. The Great Gatsby is all about a man who is crazy in love with a woman and will/has do anything for her. Time and time again Gatsby has shown that he would go to the ends of the earth for Daisy. In Twilight, from the very first time Edward meets Bella he cannot resist her (though it was the blood he couldn't resist its still hecka romantic).
