The response to each pairing was almost entirely different - Freud received criticism on the piece, receiving comments such as  "extremely unflattering" (Daily Telegraph), "a travesty" (The Sun), to "painful, brave, honest, stoical and, above all, clear-sighted" (The Times). He even criticised it himself stating that he needed more time on the project. Warhols depiction of the then Queen however, received very positive feedback from the Queen herself, and four of the prints are currently part of the Royal Collection. Whether you love or hate them, the royal family are one of the biggest parts of British culture, so I think no matter what kind of work you make in relation to them, someone will have something to say about it.

This was my main source of inspiration for this poster, where I have redesigned the new one pound coin with King Charles II face on, with new “God Save Our Nation” propaganda. This is a play on words of the national anthem “God Save The King” which, along with the “only” one pound text symbolises the economical crisis in Britain happening in the same year as the most expensive royal coronation in history. The royal family is in purple since it is the royal colour, and the number 213 is in red to emphasise how huge this statistic is. The payments, while being progress from nothing, still aren’t inclusive of all those in need and aren’t an answer to a nationwide economical crisis. What most certainly also isn’t an answer, is a nine figure coronation being funded by 32 million tax payers across the country while inflation on food and non alcoholic beverages are the highest they have been in 45 years (19.2%).In my first attempt, I drew King Charles II with his crown on but enlarged the crown to emphasise it, which gave a subtle but charcuterie feel to the drawing, and put pound signs over his eyes to symbolise money hungry capitalists. I also outlined the drawing in purple, the colour of royalty. However, I started again and changed the colour palette as well as swapping the drawing for photographs, because the first poster didn’t look finished and like something I could actually see being published. The sizes of the fonts differ based on how important each part of the sentence is for the narrative being pushed.
