This is important to the story because it gives a basic overview to what the rest of the story is about. This quote is the first example Mark Twain includes about unfair treatment. This quote is important because it shows that Hackett received unfair judgment. In this quote, it shows how by not making excuses she was fairly judged . In the first to examples, the criminals made excuses for their actions and were let go.
