"This country, during the last thirty or forty years, has produced some of the most remarkable cases of insanity..." (1).

This is important to the story because it gives a basic overview to what the rest of the story is about. By stating this, you can infer that the rest of the story is about cases of insanity.

"But at last he did something that was serious. He called at a house just after dark one evening, knocked, and when the occupant came to the door, shot him dead" (1).

Baldwin committed murder. So you would think that he would face fair treatment and be sentenced to death. This quote lays a backdrop to what is yet to come.

"...it was shown at half passed ten in the morning on the day of the murder, Baldwin became insane..." (1).

This quote is the first example Mark Twain includes about unfair treatment. Baldwin was deemed insane and, as a result, was not found guilty or even sentenced to prison.

"...he drove a knife into Felder's neck, killing him instantly" (2).

This is the second example Twain gives of a murder. Here Lynch Hackett killed a butcher walking down the street.

"...people had been afflicted as shown, else Hackett would certainly been hanged" (3).

This quote is important because it shows that Hackett received unfair judgment. By stating that Hackett should have been hanged, it shows that by deeming yourself insane, you can get out of punishment.

"The servant girl, Bridget Durgin, at dead of night, invaded her mistress's bedroom and carved the lady literally into pieces with a knife" (3).

Here, the author gives another example of a murder. This is important because it gives context to what is to come.

"No such plea was offered in her defense....and she was promptly hanged" (3).

In this quote, it shows how by not making excuses she was fairly judged . In the first to examples, the criminals made excuses for their actions and were let go. However, in this example, Durgin was executed because she was honest.

"...one of his bullets wandered a bit of course, and she dropped dead" (4).

This is the last example that the author gives. By stating what happened in the murder, he is giving the reader information to make a logical conclusion.

"Really, what we want now is not laws against crime, but a law against insanity. There is where the true evil lies" (4).

This quote is important because it helps develop the theme. By Mark Twain mocking the criminals excuses, he helps illustrate the theme of it is not good to make excuses for your actions.
