  • When a mother consumes alcohol, the substance is passed from the mothers blood to the fetus. The most susceptible area of the baby when a mother drinks are the brain and the spinal cord because these control functions in most of the body, so damages to these areas can disrupt cell growth.

  • Embryonic Stage (First 8 weeks)
    • Beginning of organ systems
    • Body plans are laid out
      • drinking is most dangerous at this time
      • potential damages:
        • birth defects
        • miscarriages,  stillbirth
  • Fetal Stage (rest of pregnancy)
    • organs are fully developed
      • Effects are still severe, but not as much as in Embryonic stage
