Unbroken

I picked Unbroken because my mom recommended it to me and it sounded like a very interesting real life story. The author of Unbroken is Laura Hillenbrand. Laura often writes biographies about WW2. The story is about Louis Zamperini who was stranded in the ocean and was adrift for almost two months. He was an Olympian and was in the 1936 Olympic Games. He was also a prisoner of war in Japan for over two years.

The speaker in this book is a narrator who is covering the story from largely Louis's perspective.
My favorite quote from this is "As the birds circled in panicked confusion, cannons began firing, prompting the birds to relieve themselves over the athletes. With each report, the birds let fly." I just think this is a really funny part in the book.

I think a great quote that describes Louie's character, especially at a younger age would be "If asked what he wanted to do with his life, he would've said, "Be a cowboy.""

This quote just shows how crazy and untamed Louie was, especially at a younger age.

A large conflict that happens in unbroken is when they are stranded and drifting at sea. Mac, a fellow crew on the crashed plane, ate all of the remaining supplies in an act of shock and feels terribly guilty about it. Louis, who is about to explode in anger realizes how bad of a state Mac is in and knows anger would do nothing to help Mac recover, controls his anger. Mac knows how he messed up and shrinks in to even deeper of a gloom, lost in his thoughts.

"The victims had to be carried to the barracks. Louie's face was so swollen that for several days he could barely open his mouth. By Wade's estimate, each man had been punched in the face some 220 times."
This quote is from the narrator, who is showing the audience the gruesomeness of Louie's punishment. Louie and his friends had stolen from the POW officer's food stores and as a punishment, every POW was to punch them in the face at maximum force. I picked this quote because it shows how much Louie had to go through as a POW and how he survived some absolutely horrifying things.

I finished reading the Scythe trilogy this year, and I was just simply blown away by it. Neal Shusterman builds an amazing world, filled with small details. I think this book made me look at reading in more detail. This book really focuses on small details, making it impossible to skim it. I think this made me slow down as a reader, and take more time in my reading.
