This section of the Crucible by Arthur Miller has a very tense and hesitant. Elizabeth often stopped speaking in the middle of a sentence, and looked to her husband for approval. She is very uncertain and frightened by Danforth. Danforth is eager to take advantage of Elizabeth and it shows through his abrupt questioning and how his exclamations get longer when she starts talking about the things he wants her to.

ELIZABETH: Your Honor, I-in that time I were sick. And I- My husband is a good and righteous man. He is never drunk as some are, nor wastin' his time at the shovelboard, but always at his work. But in somewhat turning from me, And this girl (She turns to Abigail.)
DANFORTH: Look at me.
ELIZABETH: Aye sir.
ABIGAIL: (She breaks off.)
DANFORTH: What of Abigail Williams?
ELIZABETH: I came to think he fancied her. And so one night I lost my wits, I think, and pit her out on the high road.
DANFORTH: Your husband- did he indeed turn from you?
ELIZABETH: (in agony) My husband- is a goodly man, sir.
DANFORTH: Then he did not turn from you.
ELIZABETH: (starting to glance at Proctor) He--
DANFORTH, (reaches out and holds her face, then): Look at me! To your own knowledge, has John Proctor ever committed the crime of lechery? (in a crisis of indecision she cannot speak.) Answer my question! is your husband a lecher!
ELIZABETH: (faintly) No, sir.
DANFORTH: Remove her!
PROCTOR: Elizabeth, tell the truth!
DANFORTH: She has spoken.

Some of the words used to cue the actors portray the tone of the scene. For example, the author chose to use 'in agony' to describe how Elizabeth is speaking at one point. This shows that lying for her husband pains her very much. It goes against her personal morals. Yet she continues to speak, because it is more important to her that her husband retain his standing in the town. All of this information I was able to gather from one very short action cue. This shows that the author put a lot of thought into every part of the story.

Elizabeth is characterized by her motivation to keep John in good standing in Salem. She chooses to lie for her husband, in order to preserve his image. She speaks very timidly, as if she is questioning what she's saying as she's saying it. She seems very frightened by Judge Danforth.
Danforth is characterized by his motivation to do what he believes is God's will. He wants to also preserve his image and the image of the court. He is very insistent on his persecution of witches. He chooses to persecute John Proctor even though he knows the man is not guilty of witchcraft. He also chooses to let Abigail explain the situation when John accuses her of lying, instead of immediately discrediting her. This is because she provides the justification for the deaths he has ordered. He speaks with great authority, and will bend anything another says to fit what he wants.
