Articles of Confederation

The Articles of Confederation is the original constitution which was replaced with the US Constitution in 1789. The Articles of Confederation definitely had some strengths and weaknesses. Some of the strengths were that the government signed a treaty of alliance with France, the government successfully waged a war for independence against the British, and the government passed the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. The Northwest Ordinance allowed the Northwest Territories to organize their own governments. Also, it banned slavery from that region.

Some of the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation were congress had no power to coin money, which meant every state had developed its own currency, their was no national court system to protect the rights of US citizens, and congress was unable to impose taxes. Since congress was unable to impose taxes, a rebellion called Shay's Rebellion was started. They burned courthouses, stole weapons, kidnapped a lawyer all because people were not paid for their services.

Caption: This is some of the Articles of Confederation. The article consists of a preamble, 13 articles, a conclusion and a signatory section.

The Great Compromise (Connecticut Plan) was an agreement that created a bicameral legislature. The Virginia Plan was a proposal for a bicameral legislature while the New Jersey Plan was a proposal for one house of congress which had an equal amount of representatives for each state. The 3/5 compromise was a compromise between the northern and southern states. The debate was how slaves would be counted when determining a states population, they decided that slaves would be counted as 3/5 pf a person.

A president is chosen by an electoral college. The electoral college votes on a president and vice president.

Caption: This picture shows how slaves were represented in state population. If you were to take 5 slave, you would only count 3 for the population.
