-Early indigenous societies (Such as the Olmecs and Mayans) flourished and expanded but eventually fell on their own.
-Conquistadors from Spain colonized Mexico when it was largely influenced by the Aztec civilization, killing an estimated 24 million people in under 100 years.
-Missionaries from the Catholic Church expanded throughout Mexico, leading to increased Spanish influence until their control was weakened by Napoleon Bonaparte's occupation of Spain in the early 1800's.
-Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a priest, alongside Vincente Guerrero defected and collaborated in eventually achieving Mexican independence from Spain in 1821.
-Mexico faced turbulent times as it faced the U.S. in the Mexican-American War, resulting in a large loss of land in the mid-1800's.
-Tension continued and the abuse suffered by civilians under their leader Porfíro Díaz led to a 10 year civil war in the early 1900's
-Today, many Mexican civilians struggle as there is little opportunity to expand their wealth and overcome their economic status.
