initally i was thinking of going for systems thinking however on further reading i found that the soft systems approach would be more appropriate to guide towards a solution for departmental evaluation, i feel that the complexity of the health care system is reflected very well with the soft system approach and how it puts into aspect the dynamic nature of the systmem, CATWOE helps to focus on the purposeful action while the 4 steps described by checkland 2000 allows for one to focus on a solution to sometimes systems of conflicting interests. prior to conducting the soft systems methodology i did do a SWOT analysis which i found useful to focus thoughts, i felt that this was appropriate considering the lack of experience i have in these things and that it was a good starting point

My plan is to utilise soft system methodology using CATWOE to examine the nature and purpose of the service and in it’s wider context providing a systematic approach to identify potential issues. I feel this approach will consider the major stakeholders within a health care system. I may need to consider to use a fishbone diagram once problems identified to findout root causes and to establish potential strategic plans of action.

I do not feel SWOT analysis provides an approach that considers all the stakeholders within healthcare and appears unilateral in regards to strategic planning. Systems thinking methodology appears to require a high level of knowledge and experience of this methodology in order to utilise effectively. I feel PEST was potentially looking at factors outside of my sphere of influence and the 5 whys will not examine complex/dynamic systems effectively. The 5 whys could be utilised once an issue has been identified.

I think moving forwards the most appropriate service analysis tools for me are CATWOE and fishbone diagram.
CATWOE will allow me to learn and appreciate problem situations between stakeholders. It is a clear and systematic approach that will focus on defining elements that make up the system of work. I hope to consider the current service from these 6 perspectives to allow me to consider its context.
A fishbone diagram will then allow me to explore the problems that have been identified within the CATWOE analysis. By using this I can identify the root cause and target my solutions appropriately.

Well, i think that in order to decide which tool to use we must first make clear of what is the problem on which we will be using it. I mean to understand the problem and the causes in order to decide which tool will suit us better in order to explain or present the analysis. A FISHBONE analysis is very clear on the causes and the general effect and easy to make the connections and present it. However a SOFT SYSTEMS METHODOLOGY applies for analysing situations among people as it happens in the clinical environment of our practice. Also when the cause of the problem seems to be mainly environmental the PESTLE analysis gives a clear answer and makes a good connection between environmental factors. Also the 5WHYS analysis is very good in exploring deep into the cause and finding the solution on an isolated problem. But this one would rather be effective in a more technical environment that in clinical practice. I have not yet decided which one or both to use as i have not decided on which problem to focus on. I feel that a combination must definetely be used to present in detail our analysis.

Personally I think would go for the CATWOE initially which will allow me a variety of perspectives around a service or issue and then allow me to identify or narrow down specific issues or problems. Then as a way to develop the causes of the issue look at implementing a fishbone diagram to get down to the 'nitty gritty' of what is influencing or causing the problem. Although it doesn't provide a solution, it will allow me to see on one page what the influences are and to look independently at each of these issues and consider how to prioritise each of these as to whether they are a major/minor cause and how to rectify this and ensure is either discontinues or changes to become a positive influence.
