Our soldiers carry burdens unknown by the general population - equipment, of course, but also the rules of engagement, the effects of actions, the loss of close friends, and the fact that they alone have to live with their actions and what they have seen. And most of them know that their family and friends will never understand what they were asked to do.

November 11, 2016 is Veteran's Day, a day that we as the general population celebrate the men & women who sacrifice so that we can have the freedoms we enjoy. But we need to remember: these men and women have seen things no person should have to, have been asked to do things no person should ever need to. They don't want to be celebrated, they want to be respected. Be careful when thanking a service member - they have done things you haven't realized, and some of them have to live with doing terrible things - even in the name of freedom....A forced or over-exuberant "Thank You" can do harm, when a single nod of recognition would suffice.

**Steps off my soapbox, as family to an OIF/OEF veteran**
