It is told by an aviator who crashed his plane in the desert. He has no food or water, but then meets The Little Prince who asks him to draw a sheep to keep the baobabs on his planet from growing. The aviator does so (even though he has no idea what baobabs are), and learns that The Little Prince lived on a tiny planet with a rose. He went on a journey to other tiny planets meeting new people - all grumpy grown-ups and then landed on earth. The Little Prince then met a fox and discovered his rose isn't the only one in the universe - unlike she says. This book has been made into a movie that will be released on May 19, 2017.
If Maddy goes outside, she will die.
That is the result of SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency), which made her allergic to everything. She can't even breathe in air without it being filtered. So Maddy is stuck in her house, with her nurse, Carla, and overprotective mom who doubles as her doctor. (Her dad and brother died in a car accident.) But then a cute boy named Olly moves into the house next door.

This silly poem is about a girl named Jessie with blue lipstick who is trying to teach her brother, Robert, manners. For example, she is trying to teach him how it is appropriate to say "excuse me" after you burp. But you should let the other person say "bless you" after you sneeze, and not say "excuse me." (Jessie seems very picky!) Her brother does not seem to care and constantly interrupts her.

"How I Taught My Cat to Love Poetry" by John Grandits

In this poem, Jessie is assigned to write a poem for someone she loves as a homework assignment in her English class with Mr. Holt. She doesn't want to write one for her family or friends, so she settles on her cat, BooBoo Kitty. At first, her cat is not impressed. So Jessie cuts it up, tapes it to a hanger, and gains BooBoo Kitty's instant admiration. But when her English teacher finds out about her cat playing with (more like eating) the poem, he is not exactly pleased.

"The Wall" by John Grandits

This poem is also about Jessie with blue lipstick. In it she talks about how she has a wall in her life. On one side of the wall, she has her friends, family (her brother for only half of the time), and familiar things. On the other side, she has random people who she sometimes interacts with, strangers, and the other half of her brother. Jessie also talks about Agnes, her friend from 7th grade. They had an incident where Agnes was mean, so now they aren't friends. The poem teaches that it is important to only let good and trusting people into your life, as some will eventually turn on you.

"Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon" from the NY Times by Whitney Joiner:

This article is a review of the book Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon. The writer stresses the theme of doomed love and the fact that the protagonist, Madeliene "Maddy" Whittier, practically lives in a bubble - the cause of SCID, which makes her allergic to "everything." Joiner also references popular teen books, such as The Fault in Our Stars and Twilight, with the similarities of forbidden love. Though it had an unconventional writing style - frequent drawings, emails, medical charts, post-it notes, etc. - the book is described as "gorgeous and lyrical." If I had not read Everything, Everything yet, I would have been convinced to read it by this book review.

According to the article, "Dear Evan Hansen," playing at the Music Box Theater on Broadway, is "a gorgeous heartbreaker of a musical." All the actors give superb performances, which takes the sensitive story about the aftermath of teen suicide to a new level. With a beautiful score by Pasek and Paul, Isherwood claims this original musical is not be missed this season on Broadway.

Trysdale has not had the best day. He just witnessed the wedding of the girl he loved. But it wasn't with him. The trouble is, he knows exactly why: in the past, he had been incredibly egoistic. But how she had loved him, showered him with admiration. Until one day, when her groom left a cactus at his door with no message or evident reason why. Their relationship was never the same again. Mr. Flannery and Mr. Morehouse are in a heated debate over two guinea pigs. Morehouse thinks of them as pets, so it would be 25 cents each. But Flannery thinks of them as just pigs from Guinea, for 30 cents each. Yet after a heated debate of letters, Morehouse does not want to take them! So Flannery is forced to feed and care for the guinea pigs, multiplying daily. This is a persuasive passage as it includes details to convince me to buy the book.
Auggie Pullman has pretty bad facial deformities. But now, after being homeschooled for his whole life, his parents have enrolled him in 5th grade. He has some really bad experiences at school, but he ends up making some new friends.
The article calls this book "a rare story" that should be read by all generations. It also "packs a punch" that most debut novels do not have. If I hadn't read the book, I would have been persuaded to by the article.

Hurricane Disaster by Lynda Jones:

A hurricane is a type of natural disaster part of a storm system called a tropical cyclone. The name can be traced back to the Taino and Maya civilization who had a destructive god named "Huracan" and "Hurakan," respectively. Hurricanes occur all over the world, caused by warm tropical waters. There are four parts of a hurricane: eye (center and calm), eyewall (surrounds eye and is not calm), wind direction, and spiral rainbands (bring rain, lightning, and sometimes tornadoes). They have names to distinguish the different storms, which can develop over days and even weeks. Their damage is organized in a wind scale with 5 categories, ranging from slight damage to power lines to destroying homes. Hurricanes are very destructive and most scientists believed they are too big and powerful to be stopped.
