MTSS provides a basis for understanding how California
educators can work together to ensure equitable access and
opportunity for all students to achieve the Common Core
State Standards (CCSS)

The question is: How does the state of California envision
support for all students at the school and district levels? This
sentence was in the first paragraph of the resource. It explains
quickly and plainly exactly WHAT the goal of MTSS is, and
HOW the goal will be achieved. This sentence really sums up
the whole purpose and intent of MTSS. Our goal to ensure
that there is equal opportunity for all students to achieve the
CCSS. To do this, we have to work together in our schools and
with families and students. My school is a Leader in Me
school, one of the seven habits we teach our kids is to begin
with the end in mind. This sentence reminds me of the what
and how, the purpose and the goals of MTSS.

In California, MTSS is an integrated, comprehensive framework that focuses on CCSS, core instruction, differentiated learning, student-centered learning, individualized student needs, and the alignment of systems necessary for all students’ academic, behavioral, and social success.

How does the state of California envision support for all students at the school and district levels?

To me, this sentence encompasses all the necessary aspects that a student would need support in. Not only does it address education, but it also acknowledges other areas where students need support to be successful. Behavior is one of these areas. I have first hand knowledge that a well meaning student will still need support in non-educational areas to be functional. This sentence also outlines how these areas of student need will be supported, such as, differentiated instruction and student-centered learning. This sententence gives a summary of what California envisions for learners.

MTSS offers the potential to create needed systematic change through intentional design and redesign of services and supports that quickly identify and match the needs of all students.

In terms of how the state of California envisions support for all students at the school and district levels?

In creating a framework that schools will use to provide targeted support to struggling students lets me know that the state of California is focusing on the “whole child.” MTSS supports academic growth and achievement, but it also supports many other areas. This includes behavior, social and emotional needs. The MTSS model can help general education students receive much needed interventions sooner. It can also help identify quickly which students need special education. What I find refreshing is that implementation seems to be urgent. The state is designing these supports to "quickly" identify the needs of students who will benefit from these services, which is a welcomed change from the long drawn out processes which has been the complaint of educators that I've had the privilege to collaborate with for the last few years.

Systematically addressing support for all students, including gifted and high achievers.

How does the state of California envision support for all students at the school and district levels?

This sentence, to me, was very effective in including all students. I believe that many times when we think about helping students we tend to think of the ones that struggle or may have some type of behavior or learning impediment. This does not mean that I believe that helping those students is not important. I also do not wish to come off as someone who is insensitive to that population because I understand how important it is to reach those students. However the fact that the sentence also included the gifted and high achieving students, made me feel like that truly includes all students. We must not forget that high achieving students also need support because it important that they do not become complacent and that they go on to achieve everything that they are capable of doing. To finalize, I believe that when we talk about reaching all students, we should remember that all students also include high achieving ones as well.
