Attack on the twin towers in New York City.

On September 11th, 2001, two passenger jets collided into the twin towers in the World Trade Center in New York City. This attack killed nearly 3,000 people, and was a dramatic experience for those involved. The World Trade Center had now fell in a whirlwind of debris. The airplanes were crashed into the towers on purpose. This event we now recognize and remember as 9/11, and we use this day to remember the ones who died, survived, and everyone involved in the tragedy.

Two other planes.

Soon afterward, a third plane had crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. The same hijackers who caused the other two attacks also had seized a fourth airplane. Four passengers had decided to fight back, this had caused the plane to crash into a field located in Philadelphia. The photo above shows the four hijackers who were responsible for the crime.

National Emergency.

This attack had shocked Americans everywhere. They had felt immense remorse for the victims involved in this tragedy. Citizens donated food, money, and their own time towards recovery effort. On September 14th, the president at the time, President Bush, declared this as a national emergency. The War on Terrorism.

On September 20th, President Bush demanded that the Taliban regime in Afghanistan turn over bid Laden and his supporters and shut down all of the terrorist camps. The United States quickly took action to build international support against Terrorism, and began to deploy troops to the Middle East. The United States believed this was a war that had to be fought. The photo above shows President Bush saluting to the troops fighting in the war for the United States.

Economic Crisis

Even before the 9/11 attack, the American Economy was still weakening. The attacks, however, made it worse, creating an economic crisis. With the United States facing a new war, Bush knew he had to act fast to prevent the mild recession that had already begun from turning into a serious economic turn-down. Bush then had to address the nation once again, on September 20th, to ask for Americans "continued participation and confidence in the American economy". Axis of Evil

In his 2002, President Bush warned that an “axis of evil” made up of Iraq, Iran, and North Korea posed a threat to the United States. Each nation had been known to promote and advise terrorism, and was suspected of developing weapons of mass destruction. Bush then warned that the United States “will not permit the world’s most dangerous regimes to threaten us with the world’s most destructive
weapons". This made all said continents an enemy of the United States politically. The image above shows a map to show where the specific areas are that are considered to be involved with the United States.

Invasion.

On March 20, 2003, the U.S attacked Iraq. More than 150,000 U.S. troops, some 45,000 British troops, and a few special forces from Poland and Australia took part in the invasion as well. A few fierce battles took place, but the Iraqis were unable to slow the coalition advance significantly. On May 1st, President Bush declared that the war was now over. About 140 Americans, and several thousand Iraqis had died. Hussein was then captured in late 2003. After a prolonged trial, an Iraqi court found him guilty of ordering mass executions. He was executed in 2006. The photo above was taken during the said invasion.

President Bush Re-Elected as President.

The ongoing war in Iraq, and failures of inspectors to find any weapons of mass destruction had weakened Bush's support on the democratic side. President Bush and Vice President Cheney were renominated by the Republicans. The Democrats nominated Massachusetts senator John Kerry for president and North Carolina senator John Edwards for vice president. Despite the problems in Iraq, voters felt it was safer to stay with the more familiar president. Nationwide, Bush won both the popular and the electoral vote. The above is from November 2nd, and was taken when Bush was re-elected to be President.

Political Issues.

The first two years of President Bush’s second term had not gone well. Americans were also frustrated with the Congress. Two Republicans had resigned from Congress after being convicted of
corruption, and House majority leader, Tom DeLay, had resigned after being indicted for violating campaign finance laws. Voters expressed their unhappiness with the president, and the Republican Congress in 2006. The Democrats won a majority in both the House and the Senate. House Democrats then elected California representative Nancy Pelosi to be the
first female Speaker of the House of Representatives. She then says in a speech on January 4th 2007; "The election of 2006 was a call to change, not merely to change the control of Congress, but for a new direction for our country. . . .Our Founders envisioned a new America driven by optimism, opportunity, and courage. . . . Now it is our responsibility to carry forth that vision of a new America into the 21st century." The video above is a video of the said speech.
