"Remember we are women, we're not born to contend with men. Then too, we're underlings, ruled by much stronger hands, so we must submit in this, and things still worse" - Ismene (Lines 74-77).

Women in Greek society had little to no say in any law or role. Unfortunately, women would have to obey the men, even if they were uncomfortable with what they were doing. Ismene reminds her sister, Antigone, of their weak role in society and how it's doubtful the'll get away with the burial of their brother. Antigone wants to be a strong woman, so she disregards her sister's concerns.

The central focus of Antigone is a woman's tenacious actions to respect her dead brother by giving him a proper burial, despite the consequences she knew would happen if she got caught.

Noteworthy events were Antigone making the choice to honor her brother although she knew she would die as a result of it, Creon still decided to execute Antigone even though she was supposed to marry his son and is his niece, and when Ismene went to Antigone's side when she was being sentenced to death by Creon. Antigone is a strong woman and she follows through with what is right, not what others tell her to do, which the main characteristic of her. Creon's decisions about putting Antigone to death show his character; he is very prideful and will not stand for anyone who goes against his rules. Ismene's action of going to Antigone's side and saying that she took part in the burial, too, showed that she is a loyal person who also believes that people should do the right thing, but not as ferociously as Antigone.

"So for me, at least, to meet this doom of yours is precious little pain. But if I had allowed my own mother's son to rot, an unburied corpse - that would have been an agony" - Antigone (Lines 519-522).

Antigone stands up for herself and her brother as she defies Creon in front of the citizens of Thebes. There is a dilemma between morales and laws in this story because Antigone wants to do what's right for her brother by burying him, even though it's against Greek law and what Creon stands for. She is a determined individual, so she doesn't care what Creon has to think. She thought it'd be more painful to submit to Creon' demise than leave her brother unburied.

"These citizens here would all agree, they would praise me too if their lips weren't locked in fear. Lucky tyrants - the prerequisites of power! Ruthless power to do and say whatever pleases them" - Antigone (Lines 561-565).

The citizens are all scared of Creon and what he would do to them if they spoke the truth. Power is a major theme in this story as Creon uses it to maintain his control over the city. The citizens subdue to Creon, which strips away their independence and individualism. However, Antigone rejects Creon, which creates a power struggle in this story. Antigone wants people to stand up for themselves and not be restrained by the king.

Creon does not have a good relationship with the two sisters because he called them crazy and wants to put them to death, even though he is their uncle. He cares about power and pride more; anyone who oversteps him will have consequences, even if it is a good thing that was done. The two sisters have a good relationship with each other because Ismene came to Antigone's side at Creon's palace and Ismene said that she would not know what to do if Antigone was dead and she had to live alone.
