- Warships from the United States arrived as they wanted Japan to open more ports and increase trade between them
- The Japanese realised that they had fallen behind the Western countries, so to catch up, they had to change. In less than 50 years, Japan became a modern, industrialised country. However, being a country with mountains and thick forests, Japan lacked natural resources.
- At the same time, Japan had ambitions of becoming a great power.
- Japan set out to build their own empire in Asia, giving then the land and resources they need.
- Eventually bringing Japan into conflict with Britain and the United States.

- A possible solution to Japan's problem was Southeast Asia.
- Germany began taking over some of its neighbouring countries.

- Britain and France declared war on Germany to stop Hitler.
- World war II began in Europe.

- Germany defeated France and took over most of Europe.
- The last country in Western Europe opposing Germany was Britain.
