It was really powerful to be in the community and get a sense of place. Driving around and getting a sense of distance and time and seeing the various community assets was important.

After the January storms I said somewhat lightly “I guess everyone in Maine now believes in climate change”. This trip showed me how devastatingly true that is. (This has not been my primary grantmaking focus so it was particularly informative for me).

More thinking about the conflict between the economic importance of the Woodland mill and the need of the Passamaquoddy for large quantities of safe fish to eat in more traditional and healthful ways.

social capital as the 'secret sauce' and ultimate strength of the region - need to emphasize this more. Incredible the many roles people play. Much more than a title or job.

The tenacity and resolve of communities faced with challenges continues to inspire. It takes true grit to take on this work. A strong sense of place and community serve as the two most important ingredients for the work.

This trip reinforced the amount of amazing work that is going on in so many communities with people putting in a lot of time and effort to make their communities the best that they can be. It also reinforces that there are so many ways that funders can make a difference by showing up and standing with these communities.

Seeing the numerous places and meeting the people doing the work really provided a different perspective than reading through an application. There is so much need and so much great work being done that these tours can help funders to focus on their funding priorities without wasting anyone's time. I loved the storytelling.
