Based on the definition of progressivism, which is, "an effort to cure the ills of American society", Booker T. Washington was a part of the progressive movement. In 21-5 he says, "'Cast down your bucket where you are'-cast it down in making friends in every manly way of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded" and "It is at the bottom of life we must begin, not at the top". This is clearly showing that he is trying to fix American society, thus making him a progressive.

I would also call W.E.B. Dubois a progressive. Although he mostly pointed out how Booker T. Washington did things wrong, he also offered some solution, and at the end of the day wanted to "cure the ills of American society". Part of progressivism is the belief that people are not only capable, but responsible for improving the lives of everyone in society. He shows that this is what he wants when he says, "the burden belongs to the nation, and the hands of none of us are clean if we bend not our energies to writing these wrongs".

They both sought to improve the lives of African Americans in our society. However, W.E.B. Dubois disagreed with Booker T. Washington when he says, "He is striving notably...but it is utterly impossible...to defend their rights and exist without the right of suffrage"

I think W.E.B. Dubois makes a batter point. I hate to use the same quote twice, but it really shows when he says, "...it is utterly impossible, under modern competitive methods, for workingmen and property-owners to defend their rights and exist without the right of suffrage". In this he makes a valid point because without the ability to elect a leader, how can one truly be in control of their life and positively change their circumstances?
