1. I wanted to highlight domestic violence in my PSA and to me it can be many forms of physical and emotional abuse towards a partner in a relationship. By definition, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, it is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship.

I just think that this is so important because based on the stories that I hear from people of their abuse, is due to many misconceptions of it. Not knowing what the signs are and misinterpreting it as something that the other person does out of love. Many of these cases can lead to death and I think it is so important to talk about it, because from my perspective I feel like not very many people talk about it. I haven't experienced it myself but have seen others around me go through it. And I feel that if it was more understood what it looks like and hears like, then the numbers might decrease.

2. https://www.thehotline.org
(Provides numbers to a domestic abuse hotline and information about it)

https://ncadv.org/learn-more/what-is-domestic-violence/abusive-partner-signs (Even includes a button on the website to quickly exit the tab- Discusses about the signs of domestic abuse)

3. This is a pretty intense topic to talk about, (maybe this is something more relevant to older kids because younger students might not understand these issues) but I think this would benefit my students by recognizing the different types of abuse and how it can be harmful to relationships. Mainly because many people in relationships don’t realize that the things their partner does is actually a form of domestic abuse. If students understand that this is something not to take lightly, then maybe it might prevent more of these cases from happening in the first place before it gets any worse.

1.
I want to talk about gay rights, both in America and around the globe, and how far we have to go until we reach equity.

Academic Definition: (via https://www.britannica.com/topic/gay-rights-movement):
"...(a) civil rights movement that advocates equality for gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons; seeks to eliminate sodomy laws barring homosexual acts between consenting adults; and calls for an end to discrimination...in employment, credit, housing, public accommodations, and other areas of life."
(The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 1998).

Personal Definition: To me, gay rights is not only about being treated equally, but being seen equally as well. A lot of straight people often forget how hard it is to be gay in modern human society; but as a gay male, it is impossible for me to ignore. I am constantly bombarded with media in which I am not represented (movies, pop songs, commercials, etc) and face a lot of judgement for who I am--an aspect of which I have no control over. I am very lucky to live in a (relatively) advanced country that recognizes gay marriage as valid and has several anti-discrimination measures in place, but there is still a lot of hatred and ignorance in America, including several alarming anti-LGBT bills that still gain traction in America, particularly in conservative states. Outside of America, however, the situation is dire--it is still illegal to be gay in over 70 countries on the planet; a fact that truly horrifies me. I could be legally executed in a lot of places just for existing. That's why this topic is so important for me.

2. https://www.humandignitytrust.org/lgbt-the-law/map-of-criminalisation/
(shows how many places there are that criminalize being gay)

https://www.hrw.org/news/2021/02/24/global-trends-lgbt-rights-during-covid-19-pandemic
(the state of gay rights throughout COVID)

3. I think further elaboration of gay rights is super important for everyone so that they learn the truth about how LGBT+ individuals are treated across the planet and the importance of fighting for equality. For myself, learning about the fight is important because it educates me about the struggle people like me face, and shows me how lucky I am to be in America; even though being gay in America is still not an ideal experience, at least I am allowed to get married and exist. For my students, especially, this topic is of utmost importance. Some of them may be LGBT+ themselves, and they need to feel that they are visible and represented in the classroom. And for students who are not LGBT+, they will learn that it is not okay to mistreat someone based on sexual orientation and how to treat everyone with equal respect. Our students today are the adults of tomorrow, and they are the ones who will inherit the Earth. I want them to go forward giving LGBT+ individuals the respect and treatment we deserve.

1. Mental Health is a topic that has risen in popularity in the last decade, it is much more common and socially acceptable for individuals to admit they suffer from a mental health disorder than it was 10 years ago; however, there is more work to be done as the stigma surrounding mental health still exists. Mental health, by academic definition, is a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being. My personal definition of mental health is perfectly summarized by the academic definition, but to add to it, the stigmas of mental health involve negative connotations revolving around diagnoses of disorders and the denial of help in individuals afflicted by these disorders. It is very common for individuals to just think “Oh I do not need any help, my depression will fix itself”, which is far from the truth, as treatment can greatly aid those suffering.

2.
Stigmas and discrimination: https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/stigma-and-discrimination

Mental Health help and counseling at UA (CAPS): https://health.arizona.edu/counseling-psych-services

3. Mental health is essential to understand in the context of teaching. On a personal level, I have dealt with my own struggles regarding mental health and I have close friends who also suffer. With my anxiety, I refused for a long time to seek help because admitting there is a problem is very hard, but once I began treatment, I learned how to lessen the severity of anxiety attacks and they now occur less frequently. The stigma is that there is something structurally wrong with the individuals struggling with mental health, which is not true. Many people will not say anything to peers because they are afraid that the peers will think differently of them or avoid them. Look at the stigma around schizophrenia, many people view them as dangerous, but the truth is that they are suffering from an illness, just like the flu, there is not something deeply wrong with them, they are people too and deserve to be treated respectfully. In the classroom, students may suffer from mental health disorders, so it is important for educators to be able to identify the warning signs, and see if they can help! It is hard for an individual to get help on their own, so with support from educators and family members, the student can start treatment and improve their mental health. Above all, removing the stigmas around mental health allows for more individuals to get help, which creates a healthier and happier society and learning environment.

1. I wanted to discuss the pay gap and inequality of the Women's National Soccer Team versus the Men's. This has been ongoing for a very long time and I think spreading the word about will only help to make some changes. The academic definition I found comes from this Washington Post article.
"The gender wage gap refers to the difference in earnings between women and men. Experts have calculated this gap in a multitude of ways, but the varying calculations point to a consensus: Women consistently earn less than men, and the gap is wider for most women of color" (https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/women/reports/2020/03/24/482141/quick-facts-gender-wage-gap/).

One of the resources I found was from ESPN and they did an article explaining the background behind the fight for equal pay, the journey they have gone on, and where they are so far. This all started in 2016, when 5 of the USWNT members filed a complaint to USSF about the pay gap.
https://www.espn.com/sports/soccer/story/_/id/27175927/us-women-soccer-equal-pay-fight-latest-next

The second resource that I found was from the recent visit that star soccer player, Megan Rapinoe, gave to President Joe Biden. It is said that they decried the pay gap and President Biden pointed out that these women are the best at doing what they do, yet they still suffer from this pay gap.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-24/soccer-star-megan-rapinoe-clashes-with-gop-on-equal-pay-day.

Further elaboration on this topic of pay gap will benefit me and my future students for a couple of reasons. One of them being that I will be able to show my students that even at the top there are women being treated unfairly. It will also teach them that no matter who you are, you deserve to be paid for the work that you do. I want my students to know, whether you are a man or a woman, you deserve to be treated equally. Physically, financially, emotionally, and in any other way should be the same. This topic can benefit all of us to know more about.

I chose to highlight child poverty, specifically in the U.S. I have met and seen many children who have lived or currently live in poverty through my mom’s job, and I feel like this topic is not talked about enough.

Personal definition: Impoverished children are those whose essential needs are not provided for. They undergo a lot of stress, are often judged for their home lives, and are restricted from living comfortably. Poverty affects children negatively and can limit academic and future financial stability in a child’s life.

https://www.children.org/global-poverty/global-poverty-facts/facts-about-poverty-in-usa

https://www.childrensdefense.org/policy/resources/soac-2020-child-poverty/

I believe that it is important to discuss child poverty amongst students because it can relate to their peers. Many students are unaware of the different economic statuses and classes, and they often will give those who are financially struggling a hard time for factors out of their control. This includes the clothes they wear, the toys they have, etc. By making students more mindful of these struggles that occur, students will be kinder to one another and be slower to judge during certain circumstances and hopefully all together. I also want to provide resources during the PSA, because this is something that can go unnoticed or be hidden. Poverty creates a lot of stress and embarrassment for a child, and this could restrict students from their education.

1. For my social justice PSA I chose to focus on child poverty. I feel like poverty is topic people try to avoid, but when it is talked about, the children living in poverty are not mentioned. Childhood poverty can have lifelong effects, so it is important to be educated on this issue, especially as a future teacher. Child poverty: children who do not have their basic needs met in everyday life (hunger, thirst, shelter, etc.)
2.
- https://www.all4kids.org/news/blog/poverty-and-its-effects-on-children/

3. It's important that I educate myself on this topic as a future teacher, so I know how to support my students who may be living in poverty. I may be able to provide snacks, clothing, and recommend different community resources. This issue is important for my students to know about because they may not realize what their classmates may be going through. By educating my students on the issue of poverty, so they are aware of what is going on in the world around them. This way they don't judge their peers and as they get older they will be more well-rounded individuals.

1.
The Social Justice topic I want to highlight in my PSA is gender inequality.
- The academic definition of gender inequality is the social process by which men and women are not treated as equals.
- My personal definition of gender inequality is when one gender is stereotyped or treated as less than the opposite gender. It can also be tied into people not respecting others' pronouns. This can lead to psychological issues for the genders. Men are stereotyped to not show emotions and to be big and strong all the time which leads to a lack of emotional intelligence. For females this can be not getting paid the same amount as men in the same job or not having the same opportunities in certain fields, like STEM careers, as men do.
2.
https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/gender-equality/
https://inequality.org/facts/gender-inequality/
3.
Educating myself on this topic can help my students so they feel comfortable on my classroom and empowered to do what they want in regards to personal identity.

1. ---
I chose to research Mental Health for my Social Justice PSA. Mental Health is a constant struggle for roughly 20% of adults and 17% of youth ages 6-17 in the US alone. Mental health has personally affected me and those close to me, and I would like to advocate for anyone who finds themselves feeling helpless in the face of mental illness.
https://www.nami.org/mhstats

To me, Mental Health is a topic that is often shied away from and seen as inferior to other physical illnesses or social issues. This is incredibly unfortunate because it is such a large part of many peoples lives and it has the potentially to be fatal. Suicide is the 2nd leading death among people ages 10-34, and I for one have been affected by this tragedy on a personal level. I believe that Mental Health should be brought to light and more services should be made free and available to anyone who needs it, free of discrimination or judgment.

According to the ADA, "mental health does not enjoy parity with physical health in terms of budgeting and attention, and this creates an unintended hierarchy where mental health is ranked lower than physical health" (Asanbe). Even though "health" has been addressed on multiple human rights legislatures, mental health is usually left with scraps. Many people still stigmatize mental health as being "attention-seeking" or "made-up", when in reality no one can understand the power of the mind unless you experience it yourself.
https://www.apa.org/international/pi/2018/12/mental-health-rights

2. ---
Further elaboration on Mental Health in classrooms would allow students to feel free to express their feelings without fear of judgement. They should know that having intrusive or scary thoughts is more common than they think and there is no shame in asking for help. I want all my students to know that they are loved and they have a place in this world whether they can see it or not. I do not want them to grow up thinking that having feelings is 'childish' or they are just seeking attention. If you are experiencing hardship when you are alone with your mind, then you are not attention seeking, you are battling and you are strong.

I would like to see the topic of mental health become less taboo, and I want more resources to become available on a wider scale.

1. I decided to discuss domestic violence for my week 3 reflection. There is many different forms of domestic violence; such as physical, emotional, financial, and much more.

An academic definition of domestic violence is, "Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, and emotional abuse." (National Center Against Domestic Violence".

A personal definition is a partner using different methods of control to continue have power over another, and a widespread problem that can effect any age, race, gender, or community.

2. Two resources I found helpful for my research were;
https://ncadv.org/learn-more
(National Center Against Domestic Violence)

https://emergecenter.org
(Emerge is a local shelter in Tucson that my sorority works close with to host informative meetings and we host philanthropy events to donate money to the shelter.)

3. It is important for my students to be aware of domestic violence and to spread awareness in order for them to look at red flag and to be cautious of abusive relationships. I would gear spreading awareness of this topic toward older grades I may teach, but spreading awareness and knowing the signs of an abusive relationship can help prevent themselves or others that they know/love from getting seriously hurt. The cycle of abuse in relationships like these is also very rampant and real, so spreading awareness to domestic violence can only help.

Fact: Purple is the color used to raise awareness for domestic violence.

1. Mental Health is the topic that I chose to highlight for my PSA. I chose this topic for a couple of reasons, one being that I myself have struggled with my own mental health and have been lucky to get the help I need, but mainly I chose this topic because of the large stigma surrounding mental health and associated to those who suffer from mental illness. The mental health topic has become more vocalized in the news and media, as well as in day to day life it has been seen that more people have become more open to admit they suffer from mental illness because it has seemed maybe more socially acceptable in past few years. With that said, people might be more comfortable in sharing info on their mental health or illness but the stigma needs to be broken down so that more people can get the help they need and get the resources they need, but more importantly that people who are suffering and struggling know its okay to ask for help and its okay to not be okay. According to mentalhealth.gov “mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices” , and I would agree with this definition but I would add that mental health is different for everyone and that its important to prioritize your mental health and well being regardless of the negative stigmas surrounding it.

2. https://nami.org/About-Mental-Illness

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mental-illness/in-depth/mental-health/art-20046477

3. Further elaboration on the topic of Mental Health and mental Illness is critical I believe in creating the most comfortable, accepting, welcoming and engaging classroom environment for my prospective students. I know from my own personal experience that mental illness can be tough especially at a young age, but I can imagine that its even harder when you don't feel like you can talk about your feelings or what you are dealing with/going through because you are embarrassed of having anxiety or depression or bipolar disorder, OCD etc. due to the fact that there is that large stigma surround the mental health and mental illness topic. Its essential that as a future educator I understand resources and how I can help students with their mental health and understanding it as well. It is also essential that my perspective students understand that its okay to not be okay and that its okay to ask for help or to suffer from anxiety, depression, bipolar ness, or OCD etc. they need to know they aren't alone and that they shouldn't be treated differently or any lesser than anyone else because of their mental health.

My younger sister had gone a lot to the hospital when she was younger and my parents struggled to pay the bills for the hospital. Even though we had insurance my parents still struggled to pay the bills. Health care in the United States is outrageous the amount someone has to pay for their health should not be so high and cause more stress to those needing the care.
"Health care — More than 30% of direct medical costs faced by U.S. Blacks, Hispanics, and Asian-Americans can be tied to health inequities.

For my social justice topic, I am going to research and make a PSA for incarceration inequalities. This is actually an incredibly broad topic with many different pathways you could explore, but for the purposes of this PSA, I am going to define it as:

The disproportionate imprisonment rates of non-white people in America.

I couldn’t find a specific definition of this, but this quote explains it well. “From arrest to sentencing, racial and ethnic disparities are a defining characteristic of our criminal justice system. Not only does racial bias pervade the justice process; people of color also face disproportionately high rates of poverty, meaning they suffer from the justice system's unequal treatment of poor people.”

Two helpful resources for my research:

https://www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/rates.html

This article is very thorough and gives statistical data outlining the racial disparities in our prison system. They even break it down by each state!

http://www.justicepolicy.org/news/8775

This article explains the concept of the school to prison pipeline that directly leads to higher rates of incarcerated black men and breaks down how and why this happens.

This topic can help my students gain a deeper understanding of the world and country around them. Whether I end up teaching in a predominantly white charter school or a low income inner city school, this information is still valid and relevant for my students to be made aware of. I think that awareness of this issue is the only way to fix it within the coming generations.

1. I am going to touch on the School-to-Prison Pipeline for my PSA. The School-to-Prison Pipeline is the tendency for students from underprivileged backgrounds to become incarcerated soon after they exit the school system, or even while they are within the school system.
2. https://www.naacpldf.org/wp-content/uploads/Dismantling_the_School_to_Prison_Pipeline__Criminal-Justice__.pdf

https://www.nea.org/advocating-for-change/new-from-nea/school-prison-pipeline-time-shut-it-down
3. Further elaboration of the School-to-Prison Pipeline is important for both students and educators to understand because it directly relates to schools. Many people aren't aware of the School-to-Prison pipeline but if more people were aware of it and how it happens, we would be more likely to dismantle it and create an equitable space for all students to learn and go through life.
