Education can have multiple benefits using technology. There is no such thing as bad technology, but how we implement the use is the key to continue progress. Discussing multiple methods such as, E-learning, Gaming and simulations and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC), will give some context as to why technology can and should be used in today's world. E-learning is done everywhere already and understanding that todays generation is much more technology oriented when learning new information and skills. So having something that is fun and engaging like gaming and Massive online courses to learn a new skill plays a critical role in technology and education. Following the hyperlink provided, a great article giving context can be read on some of these benefits.

Technology has increased to make learning certain skills and procedural knowledge easier and safer. Gaming and simulation technology creates an adaptive feedback that can make it fun for the learning while gaining competency and confidence skills in learning technical material and scenarios. In the military, we often use this in computer based training for some of our general training about media, information and other bits in the form of a game trying to have a certain high score. The higher the score, the better you were at retaining the knowledge needed to complete training.

-Pros:
This can be done anywhere, eliminating travel.
Can be made specific to job, making it meaningful.
Can increase interpersonal relations and increase retention in skills and ability with training.
Decrease training time and increased return on investment.

-Cons:
Learners may not take training seriously.
Cost is high, but as technology evolves, this will lower over time.
Lack of Human interaction may make learner uncomfortable.
Learners must have some skill knowledge before using this method.

E-learning, or web based Training is more or less seen today almost everywhere. Because of its impact of being able to be a blended learning style of face-to-face interaction and computer based training, this allows information to worked with at multiple angles. In my personal time in the workforce and in school, institutes and companies provide this particular type of training that may not need a face to face interaction. For example a school like Angelo State University provides training on alcohol abuse and consumption while students are in college. They do this under mandated laws and provide safety, security and information for general well-being.

Pros:
Training is easy to update for basic knowledge, such as remembering concepts
Equally as effective in teaching procedural knowledge
Can reduce travel expenses and increase numbers in training
Can also increase social collaboration between various methods such as email, chatrooms and blogs.

Cons:
Extensive in time to develop. (8 hours of online content that can be done in 1 hour in person.)
Requires basic set knowledge of procedures before use.
Lacks personal communication amongst peers
Even with greater flexibility to access training, busy lifestyles can hinder completion of training.

MOOCs are beneficial in the sense that these courses are usually credited and associated with universities and private companies. These courses allow the learner to be taken anywhere and if the learner wishes to continue with a certification exam, for a small fee the user can attain that to little or no cost. These courses can vary and have recorded lectures but the course information and material are equally accessible to everyone.

Pros:
Low cost and accessibility, making it popular in todays generation.
This is learner-controlled - individuals work at their own pace.
A combined approach to lectures, course material and physical interactions.
Upon completion, course can be formally credited for colleges or other certifications.

Cons:
High Drop out rate and most do not take credit exam
This may not be engaging, dependent on course but also the learner.
Depending on the course, it may be better to have it in person where interaction is needed.

Ethical Principal

Knowing that technology can help enhance training and learning, we must accept the fact this can hinder our performance too. How we appropriate our skills to learn with technology is up to the users.

The example to give is with E-Learning and web based technology training. A person who has access through the material may also have access to the internet where all information and answers to any course is there. We see this in learners who do not take the time to review the course, who may plagiarize or more. The ethical dilemma is understanding where the work ethic must be placed with trust and integrity in an individual.

Our resources that we use for technology based methods are everywhere. We have them in our homes, our schools and even coffee shops. Resources providing a personal connection in these methods are computers, gaming software and WiFi. The accessibility provided now are in almost all homes. Our computers evolve almost every other year, providing the requirements needed to use Word, Excel or programs like Private company Onboarding applications installed for distance learning. Our gaming software can provide realism or scenario based aspects for learners to incorporate comprehensive relations with people or science. All of these with WiFi, allows us to implement a training program that can be used for multiple angles and provide better 21st century skills for the public and the working class world. These sources provide a base set of knowledge to understand each method because all of these methods require all three resources, if not more.

There are Four things to consider when starting a training plan. 1. What is our objective? 2. Do we absolutely need this? 3. Do we have the resources for this? and 4. Pick the best and do it.

With the three methods spoken about earlier, all things considered the pros and cons of each one will take time and money. Time will tell how the results show in comparison for example, quarter to quarter, or year to year. By providing a comparison of the results using these methods and resources, to traditional based training without technology resources we can see what provides the best qualitative data for our work center.

With the training methods provided, most of these if not all are already done today at my workstations. Computer based training are already done with yearly competency trainings like sexual harassment training. At times though there are technological limitations with computers, not necessarily hardware. Wifi, or bandwith capabilities may need to be increased at the workplace to have smooth trainings.

As E-learning can be comprehensive with material, context and feedback, this can incorporate gaming and simulations. Trainings should be placed more with the emphasis on engagement but using gaming in the CBT's through e-learning or other combinations of e-learning and blended learning might be better suited. This is all dependent of where and what job is being done. Gaming may have more benefit with student and teaching environment, geared towards the academics part of my workplace.

Implementing these resources are mostly done now but can always be improved.
