Part A covers phrases applicable in external communications from ship to shore, shore to ship and ship to ship as required by STCW 1978, as revised, Table A-II/I, as well as phrases appliclable on board vessels in conversations between pilots and bridge teams as required by Regulation 14(4) of Chapter v of SOLAS 1974, as revised.

1- Mayday: This call is made when one or all of the crew is in imminent danger and should be made only by the captain in charge of the ship.

2-Pan-Pan:This call is made when an emergency occurs on the vessel but does not pose an imminent danger to its crew.

For example: it can be due to medical assistance or mechanical failure of the boat.

For example: Pan Pan, station name, ship name, position, report the problem and type of help you need.

3-Securite:This call reports a threat to the safety of navigation or something relevant from a meteorological point of view.

For example: securite, vessel name or mmsi, say a working channel, go back to vessel name, select channel and say securite, vessel name, safety message, vessel name and say finished.

1. Establishing Communication: It begins with a specific call to the desired station, followed by the identification of the caller's own vessel.

2. Vessel Identification: Each vessel must clearly identify itself at the outset of communication by providing its name, call sign, or Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number.

3. Transmission Format: A standard format is used to transmit messages clearly and concisely, following norms established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

4. Instructions and Safety Messages: Navigation instructions, weather information, hazard warnings, and other safety-related messages are transmitted.

5. Confirmation and Repetition: It's important to confirm and repeat received instructions to ensure accurate understanding between the involved parties.

6. Use of Standard Phrases: Standardized phrases and codes are employed to facilitate quick and effective communication, reducing the possibility of misunderstandings.

7. Communication Priority: A hierarchy in communication is established, giving priority to emergency and safety calls over other communications.

8. Conclusion of Communication: Communication concludes with a standard farewell exchange to confirm understanding and completion of the transmission.

2. IMO (International Maritime Organization): A specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for setting standards and regulations for maritime safety, environmental protection, and maritime transportation efficiency.

3. MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships): An international agreement that establishes regulations to prevent pollution of the marine environment by ships, addressing issues such as oil spills, ballast water, and waste.

7. SOLAS VGM (Verified Gross Mass): Regulations that establish requirements for verifying the gross weight of cargo containers before loading onto ships, aiming to improve maritime safety.

8. SAR (Search and Rescue): International regulations and procedures for coordinating maritime search and rescue operations in case of emergencies at sea.

Malory: In the current environment within logistics operations, the English language is used and is important for us students as future professionals, knowing these terms helps us train and communicate efficiently since it is an additional complement in our field or workplace.

Griselda: As a student and future professional, having developed this activity expanded my knowledge because I did not know this subject, and I consider it very important since it is something that will help me in the future when a situation presents me, to be able to identify if someone needs help or ask for it correctly, in addition to the fact that this activity also helps me to connect more with another language that is undoubtedly fundamental within a very competitive world.

Jorlenis: When investigating these 3 words or subtopics, i realized that the maritime field is broad and has many laws or regulations; that must be met for good navigation.

Maryorie: As a student, knowing new terms is essential to expand your vocabulary and enhance your understanding in different areas of study. By learning new terms, you can delve deeper into specific concepts and develop a greater ability to analyze and discuss ideas more accurately. Additionally, becoming familiar with technical or specialized terms in your field of study better prepares you for future research, academic projects, and professional collaborations.
