Anesthesiology - Types of Anesthesia

Dr. Varuzhan Dovlatyan, a fellowship-trained anesthesiologist, administers anesthesia to patients in and around New York City through the 44th Street Health and Wellness private practice. To prepare for his career, Dr. Varuzhan Dovlatyan underwent his anesthesiology residency and cardiac anesthesia fellowship at Brookdale University Medical Center.

Before surgeons can perform operations, patients must be property anesthetized for their comfort and safety. However, administering anesthesia is a complex process, which is why it’s handled by an anesthesiologist, who administers anesthesia during surgery.

Different procedures call for different types of anesthesia. Local anesthesia numbs a specific part of a patient’s body and does not cause unconsciousness. Regional anesthesia, one step up from local anesthesia, numbs entire regions of the body. For example, an anesthesiologist may administer a regional anesthetic into the spine that in turn shuts down feeling in the legs so that doctors can operate on them.

General anesthesia achieves unconsciousness in patients over the course of surgery. Anesthesiologists can administer general anesthesia in gaseous form or intravenously. Anesthesiologists monitor patients under general anesthesia very closely to ensure that vital signs remain within acceptable ranges.
