In the Mayan civilization, there were 6 kingdoms that were unified under one main ruler. This was held together by their culture and traditions. They expressed their power by building massive and complex temples. Mayan people were very advanced, they studied math, astronomy, and writings/literature.

In the Cahokia tribe, the leaders maintained order by corn production. This tribe had smaller city-states that controlled villages and oversaw the production of corn. The rulers exhibited this control by building many huge earthen temples around this area. Many scientists think that what led to the decline of the Cahokia is the earth cooling off (known as the Little Ice Age).

This empire, Chaco, maintained power by building massive and complex buildings known as the Great Houses. Note - many scientist argue over the fact if thousands of villagers lived in them or just a few elite. Chaco nobles built the Great Houses to keep this practice of order by facing these houses towards monumental studies. For example, the sun, moon, cardinal directions, and water devices. Their governement retained such powers by being a huge center of trade. Although there is a shroud of mystery around the Chaco because of the lack of writing or inscriptions. The downfall of this empire is believed to be because of the following: lack of constuction and migration to other areas.

The Mesa Verde, translated means "green table" in English, maintained order by making stone or cliff dwellings. They used these for storing ancient artifacts and held rituals here. Historians think that the decline of the Mesa Verde people was due to a harsh cold that lead to less crops. This contributed to many people migrating towards the Chaco Canyon. However, a few individuals remained. (You can even see the finger and hand prints in the mortar holding the bricks together to this day!)

Incan empire continued order by having one ruler called the "sole ruler". He oversaw everyone in the empire. There was a chief priest that was a second to the emperor and help control the nobles beneath the king. They had mit'a which was a mandatory labor which helped develop the empire and maintain power.

In the Aztec Empire there was an emperor that ruled, he was called Huey Tlatoani or, what is translated in English as, "great king". He was assisted by high ranking nobles and a Council of Four who were powerful men and general of the army. They had laws that helped them maintain order, in fact the Aztecs had a fairly complex set of laws. The way they maintained this power was by making lands they conquered pay tribute.
