When we discuss the fact that the temperature of Mars is lower than the temperature of the Earth I usually organize an experiment with two smartphones and a flashlight. The distances between the two smartphones and the flashlight are proportional to those between the Sun and the planets. We can see that the fartest phone receives less light than the other.

I really like the idea of building a scaled Solar System in the city. An example I can think of is to introduce the greenhouse effect happening on Venus (and also on Earth, not so fun fact) with a fishbowl, a lamp, a termometer and some cotton (to recreate clouds). I still have to think more about how to implement this.

I think that a good way to start with Astronomy is painting and making a Solar System in a real scale in order to make pupils see how far are the planets.
