Look Both Ways is a book made of many short stories. The author, Jason Reynolds, made these short stories which all connect to each other. Although some people might say friendship is not important in life, it is, because of the clear examples in the book Look Both Ways.

Theme Exploration

Friendship is a very important theme in Look Both Ways. In brings everyone together in good or difficult times. "TJ who would show up, crack some jokes, break some ice, and leave some empty potato chips bags next to Jasmine's bed. Friendship flags" (Reynolds 9). This tells us that TJ and Jasmine had things called friendship flags which helped keep them close together. These flags symbolized their friendship with each other. "Then they thumb their chins and shake their hands at each other before ending it with a big hug. "Brothers", Simeon said. "Brothers", Kenzi repeated" (Reynolds 114). This shows the close connection between Kenzi and Simeon. Both their brothers have been in problems and to solve that they have their friendship to become brothers to each other.

Character Analysis

In The "Low Cuts Strike Again", the Low Cuts group seems to develop to the readers as the book progresses. They seem to be a bad group as they find many ways to take or even steal money and other goods. "Francy, John John, Bit, and Trista build up money to buy Bit's mom an ice cream as she had started chemo" (Reynolds 39-40). This shows that the Low Cuts are using what they do for a good cause with helping out Bit's mom in her time of chemo. All of their parents have cancer and we learn that they are brought together to give honor to their parents.

Friendship can represent any important moment or even big change in your life. "This story was going to begin like all the best stories. With a school bus falling from the sky" (Reynolds 1). A bus falling from the sky can symbolize a big moment in someones life; something unusual. Making a strong friendship can be a important and big point in another person's life.

Personal Reflection & Conclusion

In conclusion, friendship in Look Both Ways connects to the real world. Friendship makes life better and easier for everyone. Without friendship life can be more challenging without somebody looking out for you. Although some people still might say friendship is not important in life, it is because of the connections between Jasmine and TJ, the Low Cuts, and Simeon and Kenzi.
