In this exhibition, we will be exploring the temples of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman cultures. Featuring a couple of temples from each culture, we can see many similarities from the naked eye. As you begin to really examine and look back, you'l start to notice few differences, but ultimately see how one influenced the next in the building of their temples. These temples were grand in scale, and each one with similar purposes all contained something unique of their own.

Greek : Ictinus, Parthenon (mid-5th century BCE), made from marble and limestone, from Athens, Greece of Greek origin

The Parthenon temple was a temple that served many purposes due to the area being ruled by many throughout its time. When originally built, it was dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena Parthenos. Its development was of one of the simplest architectural orders; the Doric order. Although an explosion inside destroyed most of it, it stands today still as a tourist attraction due to the careful placement of everything. This temple served as a place of worship for the original inhabitants, but for the generations to come, it served as a blueprint.

Etruscan : Vulca, Temple of Minerva (6th century), made from wood, mud brick, or tufa, from Rome, Italy of Etruscan origin

The original temple is no longer here. This is because the material used were perishable material such as wood, mud brick, and tufa. Due to the temple being made of this, time and mother earth took it down. The columns here were of Doric order just as the Parthenon was. The structure was much different with only having columns in the front instead of all around, but this temple was thought to have been used for honoring some God or multiple Gods.

Roman : artist unknown, Temple of Portunus (late 2nd century BCE), made from travertine and tufa, from Rome, Italy of Roman origin

This temple is one of the best perverted and still stands today. The architect who built it is unknown, but it is dedicated to the God Portunus. This temple however had an Ionic order instead of the Doric order that we saw on the last two temples. This can be seen by looking at the scroll-shaped capitals. It was constructed by travertine and tufa. This temple was a place of worship for those around and was an inspiration to many other architects.
