Years the Case Took Place: December 2016-June 2017
What led to the case: Edith Windsor married her wife in Canada, where the marriage was legally recognized. They owned property in New York. However, when her spouse passed away and all the property was given to Windsor, the state heavily taxed her for it because the marriage was not recognized due to DOMA.
