Th subject matter is the landscape of a park in La Grande Jatte with Parisians resting and spending a Sunday afternoon. The Parisians present in the painting varies by rank, age and gender. This painting represents the activity of Parisians on a Sunday afternoon which is known to be a time of leisure and relaxation. Some characters in the painting are found to be quite odd which is the lady with the monkey on a leash. The area that is shown in the painting is known to be a place to procure prostitutes.

He used a technique which he developed called pointillism. It is the combination of many dots to compose a picture and the dots will blend perfectly in the viewer's eyes if the viewer is standing a distance from the painting. The painting is done by oil on canvas.

Seurat focused on the landscape and worked on this painting for two years. He did his research on color theories by scientists specifically for this project to concentrate on light, color and form. He adapted his scientific research on this painting. Georges Seurat was a disciplined and ambitious man, as he wanted to make art history, and he succeeded with La Grande Jatte.

This art is significant for it teaches a different and unique way of painting, reminding other artists that innovation is important in art. It is the first painting to be painted entirely based on pointillism style and it delineated the advancement of the Post Impressionist art movement as a whole.
