At the beginning of the novel, Melody was almost eleven years old and lived with her father and mother. She described herself as a girl who has always been surrounded by words.

Melody's parents have always talked to her and read to her, and she has absorbed and remembered everything they have said so far. 

However, she has never spoken a single word. She has always felt frustrated by her inability to speak.

She described how people always stare at her or don't even notice her presence.

Her parents were described as loving and supportive, and they have always done everything they could to help her.

Melody loves music, and she associates different types of music with different colours and smells.

She felt frustrated by her inability to communicate with others, but she was determined to find a way to express herself.

Melody described herself growing up. Her parents realized that she was different from other children when she was unable to hold a toy.

Melody's father has always read and sang to her. She believes she has a photographic memory, being able to remember everything she sees and hears.

Every time Melody got frustrated, her arms and legs started to jerk around, she screamed, and she had difficulty breathing. She calls these experiences "tornado explosions." 

Melody's mother couldn't understand why she sometimes behaves that way, so she called the doctor. Melody's doctor prescribed a sedative, but her mother refused to give it to her.
