This game where she chopped the wood was awesome. As the wood would symbolize the word and your hand movement making the jester to chop breakout phonetic sounds to sound out the word. In the LDA link, teaching students the alphabet it goes beyond knowing the names of the letters. Students develop a sense purpose behind the letters. When teaching students with learning disabilities it  takes time and special help for the student(s) need to understand. Explain to students with learning disabilities need a demonstration of how using manipulative can break small sentences down to words. Another example of demonstrating how to break words up is with clapping out the word. As a recent long term substitute for a special education, I seen classes develop fluent reflective reading by reading the news stories everyday.
