Our school is very difficult for students who have any sort of disability to get around. It is also like a prison- few windows, if it's cold outside, there really isn't anywhere for the kids to go & get some exercise (the gym is sort of small). A child with a disability would have a tough time getting around.

The barriers that I see in my classroom And school are that some students are viewed as needing too much help and teachers do not feel they should have to deal with it. This happens more for my students with learning differences because the teachers feel they are not equipped with enough resources. A. Peavler

Our school is very hard to navigate. The school was remodeled a while ago to change the stairs into ramps, but the school is essentially a bi-level house. When we have students in wheelchairs, or even on crutches, they have to go the long way around, just to be able to access all areas of the school without using 3-4 stairs to get there.

Students with disabilities are segregated from their peers and placed at certain schools that might have specific classrooms for them. Often I see that these students are never around regular education students and vice versa.

Similar to others, the students with disabilities are segregated into different classes. They even go on separate field trips, which could be a great opportunity for some inclusion and for the other kids to have a chance to get to know them.

My school is actually pretty easy to navigate for students with disabilities. We have an elevator for students to use to go upstairs. I currently have a student who is wheelchair bound. We have found no major problems She has been able to easily navigate in my classroom. The biggest issue has been in the cafeteria where she has difficultly reaching all of the lunch choices and then there are not any wheelchair accessible seats at the table where my class eats. She has had to go to a table for the pre-K students to eat while remaining in her chair otherwise her chin is level with the table!

I was an aid for an ECE student a few years ago. It was nice to see first hand the benefits of her being in the general education classroom. What was disheartening was hearing other educators speak of her and comments about how she should be in self contained. She is lucky that her parents took her rights as a public school student seriously and did not allow her to be "pushed" into a self contained classroom. She learned social skills and had exposure to things she may not have otherwise encountered during the school day.
-M.E.

We have an autism unit at my school but we do not have many of the sensory resources that these students need to thrive. The money is spent on students who are tested on KPrep
