Such as earthquakes. The seismometer put epicenters where the earthquakes were. They outlined the tectonic plates. This is because the plates move. The plates boundaries move away from each other, towards each other, and next to each other. Not only can this movement create earthquakes, it can also create mountain ranges, volcanoes and other features of earth's surface.
