This is a contemporary interpretation of Sister Mary's decorative style. This piece is full of bold, striking colours such as pink and yellow with contrasting colours of black and white to help emphasise the hand rendered typography. To create this piece on A3 card I ripped up both pink and yellow card as a bold background and then used two block strips of solid black at the top and bottom to allow the different type to stand out from the loud background. I have incorporated a multitude of different typography fonts like cursive, Impress, Britannic Bold and Franklin Gothic. I have alternated the positioning of the type in to make it more interesting and fit well with the artists style. I have included techniques such as collaging and inverting colours as I decided to invert the colours of the words 'things' and 'who' to enhance them further. I decided to create a whole compositional piece with positive space to make the most of all of the vibrant colours and dramatic typography. For the background I ripped the pieces of paper so they're not in any specific shape instead they are all randomly placed and angled differently. I chose to stick with quite a warm colour scheme as my main colours are pink and yellow which work harmoniously together, however I also introduced contrasting monochromatic colours of black and white to add contrast and complement the whole piece. I love how this piece is full of different formal elements like bold colour, randomly ripped shapes, different textures of ripped and cut out paper, alternating dark and light tones, and a small degree of straight-line edge work to border the type. I really like how this design turned out as I love the contrasting colours, how striking it is, how well the typography stands out from afar, and mainly how well it emphasises my first rule. I also believe it is a good emulation of Sister Mary's style specifically in the use of block colour. This piece reminds me slightly of Kurt Schwitters' style, as he was a historical artist who worked mainly with collaging of imagery and type, and often incorporated contrasting colours. This also reminds me of a poster I saw outside the Tenby art gallery a few years ago. This piece conveys a happy/positive mood for me as the bright warm colours I associate with summer and happiness, thus creating a joyous mood. I really like the different hand rendered typography styles and typeface as they all compliment each other nicely as well as standing out well from the background. To create this piece on A3 card I decided to rip up green, orange and blue card as a vibrant collage style background, then I used different cards like black to write on in inverted white, yellow card to draw on in black, white card to write on in black, and the black card to use as negative letters from the cut outs. I have alternated the positioning of the type to make it more interesting as it's quite a busy piece and I wanted the type to be more exciting in the composition. I have included techniques like collaging and inverting colours as I decided to invert the colours of the words Great, achieved and Happen to enhance them further. I decided to create a whole compositional piece with positive space to make the most of all of the vibrant colours and enhance the type. For the background I wanted the ripped pieces of card to be in a random collage style to add further to the piece. I also introduced contrasting monochromatic colours to contrast well with the bold colours. I love how bold and attention grabbing this piece turned out as it really draws the eye to the type and the colours really compliment each other well. I included several ripped pieces of card with a small amount of straight line work to frame certain type. I think this is a very good emulation of Sister Mary's style as it is bold, vibrant, striking, and conveys a strong obvious message. This piece reminds me slightly of Henri Matisse's piece called 'the snail' which is full of randomly placed bold colours. This piece correlates a loud/bold mood for me as the striking tones convey boldness. I chose to incorporate monochromatic hand rendered typography of black and white to stand out against the colourful background. To create this piece on A3 card i ripped up blue card to create a full background with pink card circles randomly dotted around. I have included techniques such as collaging, impasto painting, and inverting colours to create this piece. I decided to create a whole compositional piece with small areas of negative space in the background to enhance the type. I love how this piece is full of different formal elements such as bold colours, randomly positioned shapes, different textures, cut out paper, alternating light and dark tones, and a small degree of straight-line work in the border of the word creativity. I like how the shapes work well in the background as that works well in the style of Sister Marys work, however I think the top half of the piece is pretty sparse compared to how compact the bottom half is. However, I think the mixture of painted and hand rendered type compliment each other well. I also believe it's a good emulation of Sister Mary's work as she often includes circular shape work alongside bold colours and type. This piece slightly reminds me of the work of Kandinsky especially their concentric circles collage work as they use lots of circular shapes and bold/vibrant colours. This piece conveys a positive mood for me as the pink circles and vivid type are what I associate with joyous connotations. This piece was created using only three colours of black, yellow and white and is created from the theme of distortion. I really like how well the colours go together as they stand out well, compliment eachother and are very striking in allowing the rule to stand out. To create this piece on A2 card I covered half of it in black card and the other half in yellow card, and then hand-rendered type for my fifth rule using black and yellow card as well as cutting out shapes to add depth and further the theme of distortion. I used three different type fonts of distortion to further this piece even more. I decided to create a whole compositional piece with minimal negative space to allow the type to stand out well from the background. I chose to create a monochromatic cold tone colour scheme as this allows my fifth rule to stand out and is very bold. I have incorporated some of the formal elements like ripped shapes, bold colour, contrasts between light and dark tones, and line work in the defining line around the word creation. This is a contemporary interpretation of her decorative style. This piece is fairly bold and and consists of striking colours like black, purple, yellow, orange, blue and pink. This piece also incorporates hand rendered typography alongside printed type. To create this piece on A3 card i ripped up both purple and blue as a bold background then added a mixture of hand-rendered type and printed lettering. I have incorporated several different typography fonts so that the piece has more depth however I don't think all the different fonts work together as it looks disjointed and lacks fluidity. I have included techniques like collaging which i think works well in this piece. I decided to create a piece with a good amount of negative pace to allow the typography to stand out and be lifted from the background. I chose to use a mixture of cold and warm tones to off-set this piece to compliment the off-set, uneven type. I incorporated some of the formal elements like bold colours, randomly ripped shapes, different textures of ripped and cut out paper, alternating light and dark tones, and a small amount of straight-line work to border the type. I don't really like how this piece turned out as it's quite dull, spacious and lacks interesting details, also i don't think it best emulates Sister Mary's style. This piece slightly reminds me of typography in magazines as they are often bold and included different angled and style font. For this piece the theme that i chose to look at was packaging and most specifically the Warburtons toastie packaging. The resemblance comes from the colour scheme of orange, yellow and white, the typography font that matches the Warburtons font, the yellow strand of wheat which are included on the packaging, as well as making the piece curved around the edges and have a bread tag to further further the idea of a loaf of bread and it's packaging. This is a contemporary interpretation that I have created using a warm colour palette which I think works really well. I really like how bold, vibrant and detailed this piece is as it really allows the rule of abandoning your comfort zone to stand out as well as looking like the packaging I was intending it to. To create this piece om A2 card i covered the background in orange card and used hand-rendered white card for the type, then i cut out the yellow wheat strands from card and cut indents around the outside and stuck on a tag. I specifically used the polygon lasso tool to highlight the sections of the print that i wanted to hide behind the print layer, such as chairs and beds. To physically see my prints edited as wallpaper indicates to me how well they fit my theme as they are all striking, eye catching, and intriguing. I showcased my final outcomes to my family members of different ages, and they all deduced that my prints incorporated strong darkroom technique/process inclusion, alongside them being full of contrast, and striking. They all agreed that my final outcomes whether looked at individually or together, are all successful In meeting my target audience of teens/adults, and definitely comply with what I wanted to achieve throughout this unit which was to produce a range of different prints that are eye-catching and strong, whilst experimenting with different darkroom techniques and processes.
