I'm Hispanic ( Mexican and Salvadorian). I became aware of my race when I was in first grade and there was only one other Mexican kid in the entire school and we ended up bonding because we shared a lot of the same experiences/ likes. I think about my race when Im in a predominantly white environment. I think race plays a huge part in how you interact with others/ how others perceive you. I tend to find friends that I can relate to which often is other Hispanics or often POC. It affects your world views because of things you have experienced due to your race. IT makes me feel exhausted often times especially because of the conversations that surround POC and their mistreatment

I grew up in the Netherlands but i went to a school that was mainly British so I always found it hard to find a group to associate with outside of my family. In primary school i faced a lot of racism but it want until i was 17 that i really became aware of it. One day during lunch i was sitting on a table with my friends and we where drawing each other on the board for fun. One of my friends when up and decided to draw me and decided it would be funny to draw a monkey and everyone laughed at it and took it as a joke. I tried to talk to one of my friends about it but she said that “ it isn’t that deep” and unfortunately i just let it go. I think that was the first time i really became awear of my race. I never actively think of my race but i am always awear of it.

I always feel that i was aware of my race but based on my earliest memory, i'd say around 5-6 years old. I was continiously taught about my culture and was imbedded with my roots and indigenous culture (zapotec tribe of Oaxaca). I think about my race everyday! I'm so proud of it. Personally, i resonate very much with my indegnous roots and also with being a chicana. My cousins and i are all chicanos and we grew up with that culture as much as my indegenous culture. I think it was whenever the school asked you to write down your ethnicity/race in the applications they made you fill out. I do often think about my race and what that makes me as a person. I do think race impacts the way others treat and perceive me especially since my people have faced discrimination and and racism for so long, and continue to do so.
