CALL started to get a communicative approach. Some computer games were developed to teach language including spelling and grammar checkers, desk top publishing programs and presentation software, so students were able to make choices and interact with the computer in a way that gave the student more control, it also stimulated writing, discussions and critical thinking. The PC was introduced in the late 1970’s. Apple computers were inexpensive and had word processors, spreadsheets, and drawing software.

In this era the approach moved to Integrative CALL.

Technology advanced in two important ways: multimedia and the world wide web. CD ROMS made multimedia programs possible, programs that include text, images, animations, videos and sounds. Hyperlinks were also included and the Internet was created with modems.

Hypermedia helps create a more authentic learning environment, helps integrate skills, gives students control and gives the student access to a wide variety of resources.

AI is created but it can not interact with a human the same as with another human.

Computers are helpful to educators, but they cannot replace a human teacher. The internet makes long distance, real time communication possible. Some teachers have been able to coordinate video conferences with native speakers to help their students. The internet also allows students to exchange text and audio files easily. AAs technology continues to evolve (smart phones, tablets, Facebook, Twitter, on-line classes and evaluations, etc.) teachers will learn how to use it in the classroom.
