I am feelings overwhelmed with ideas to use. I am not entirely sure which route I want to go for promoting a cause, product or something entirely different. However, I am excited to create a unique promotional video and creative journal. I have done something similar to this in my senior years of high school however they were not as detailed as this creative journal. I do have a few ideas in mind, I am mainly leading towards promoting a cause or spreading awareness about a certain subject as it suits my interests and will make it easier for me to create as I am passionate about the awareness of particular subjects.

Target Audience: Females aged 18-22, who are currently or have studied a University degree. These students may have gone straight to university from high school, taken a gap year or waited longer than 1 year to start university.

My intention is to raise awareness to the distressing effects of depression that female students both past and present have experienced. I will capture this by showing them the isolation, burnt-outness and suicidal tendencies of overachievers and self-sacrificing students to make my message more relatable to the target audience. This will hopefully allow those who know someone or are a person who is struggling to seek help from loved ones, friends or professionals to stop the rise of depression among female students.

The message surrounding this topic is that depression can kill, whether that be mentally or physically. I want to raise awareness to the devastating negative affects of depression, especially with the stress of university. The financial, social and academic challenges create an environment where vulnerable students can fall into a deep depression. I want the message to convey how students are feeling and that they have support from family, friends or others. I want the audience to ask for help when needed and to offer help for those who they suspect might seriously need a friend.

Who does this message affect?
This message affects the female university students as they are constantly receiving endless workloads on top of exams and assignments that they must complete which decreases their mental health as universities stress that students need to spend ridiculous amount of hours studying. Families are also affected as students can hide their suffering by receding and not socialising. This can make their families alarmed and also make their mental health decrease. The friends of the students are also affected by this message as supporting a friend in need is not always as smooth as advertisements make it out to be.

Who is the target audience?
The target audience is 18-21 year old female university students who are experiencing a decline in their mental health. More specifically call those female student who are currently experiencing hard times either academically or financially (regarding education) making the go into a deep depression.

What emotions are being brought out of the audience and why is it a problem to the audience?
The emotions being brought out of the audience are sadness and despair. this is due to struggling with keeping up the workload and expectations from society. This is a problem as depression is a hard place to come back from, which makes it even harder to ask for help as some students are embarrassed of their situation. Although the audience might not think this is a problem currently, depression is a chemical imbalance in their brain. Once it has evolved, it is hard to return to a good state of mind. This can lead to self harming tendencies or death.

What research do I need to conduct?
I will need to research online articles, statistics, journals and websites. I will also need to conduct research on previous examples of mental health advertisements as it is difficult to attract an audience for more than give seconds.

This advertisement will capture the desperate emotions of a depressed female university student and the support they can receive.

The advertisement starts with a woman lying in her bed. Her room looks chaotic, clothes piled up in her laundry basket and books piled on the floor. Her room is dark and the only clear item that is seen is her phone when her alarm goes off. She continues to put her alarm on snooze, hoping that it will just go away. As her phone continues to ring her alarm. She frustratingly turns it off to see that she has notifications from her university friends rudely reminding her that she has 2 very important essays due that same day. As the audience takes a look at her face, they can see that she is very pale and her under-eyes are dark from lack of sleep. Her face shows that she is almost content with her situation, she does not care whether she fails or passes as she is just numb to her situation. She mutes her notifications and goes back to sleep. As she sleeps, she receives a message from her friend, asking if she is okay.

The ending of the advertisement will show a message that appears on the screen. It will read 'it only takes one message' and 'are you okay?'.

Beyond Blue, n.d, 'Depression', viewed 29 March 2023, <https://www.beyondblue.org.au/mental-health/depression>.

This webpage displays the symptoms of depression and how people can identify it. It talks about the different types of depression and shows a video of multiple people explaining their views of their experiences. It also gives recommendations of how to treat it and where to seek support. From this webpage, I was able to understand how depression forms silently overtime and how much of an impact it makes in peoples' lives. I was able to gain more knowledge of depression which I will be able to display in my character. This will help my advertisement be more realistic and relatable to the audience.

Blanco, V, et. al 2021, 'Symptoms of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress and Prevalence of Major Depression and Its Predictors in Female University Students': International journal of environmental research and public health, vol 18, no. 11.

This journal article researches the statistics of depression in female university students. They conducted a survey to determine the percentage of depressed, anxious and stressed female students in Spain. It resulted in around 50% of students around the age of 20 have experienced high levels depression, anxiety and stress during their education. i was able to understand the reality of mental health in different countries and was able to gain perspective of how high the percentages are currently. This has inspired my promotional video as it gives clarity to the urgency of this message and helps my knowledge of mental health to create a professional and appropriate advertisement.

The Students Team Page, 2017, 'Dealing with depression at University: Desree's Story', Student's Page, The Student Magazine, April 13, viewed 2 April 2023, <https://www.studentpages.biz/dealing-depression-university-desrees-story/>.

This online website article depicts the story of a former university student named Desree. She talks about how she felt that she had no purpose in life and that her relationship was abusive. She did not realise she had depression which was a contributing factor to her studies. This article allowed me to understand personal experiences of depression which gives my advertisement more meaning. This article has inspired my promotional video as it gives more depth into different symptoms of depression which I can illustrate in my film.

This advertisement aims to send the message that approaching a friend in need may be awkward but it leads to good outcomes. They've used the message of supporting someone when they seem to be having mental health issues can do good. I aim to use this as inspiration for my overall message that if you have a friend in need that you should reach out.

Ad Council, 2018, 'The Awkward Silence: Friendship & Mental Health' Advert, video, Youtube, viewed 2 April 2023, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gKtVoSgNNM>.

Mind Map Reflection

This mind map I have created is for inspiration and gave me a variety of ideas that add to my message. Words such as 'numbness' or 'desperation' stood out to me and gave me ideas for the type of character I wanted to illustrate in my promotional video. The words such a 'stress', 'workload' and 'exams' have inspired me. They gave me an idea to focus on how the stress of higher education and how that enhances depression. My video will be different to others as it will show that the character has support at the end of the video, which gives hope to the target audience that they can receive support if they want it.

I will be using these fonts for my website and promotional video. I decided on these as 'Indie Flower' gives off a handwriting appeal which would attract university students as it is less bold and more subtle yet calming. The 'Quicksand' is easy to read and is less unique which does not clash with the title font.

This advertisement aims to send the message that anxiety disorders are health concerns too. They have expressed that there is not enough done about anxiety and that the stigmas surrounding it have made doctors dismiss struggling people. I am using the video as inspiration as the message is clear and the mise-en-scène is excellent. I plan to use a similar visual concept, however, instead of talking I want the body language to convey the message.

CAMH, 2018, 'I Can't Breathe' Advert, video, Youtube, viewed 2 April 2023, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBS7v-v5oMo>.

I have decided to do a range of purple shades with a more subtle brown shade and a light pink shade. I decided on these colours as dark purple represents sadness and frustration which the target audience can relate to.

I also wanted to have lighter shades to indicate that there is hope and that support is always accessible. The light brown shade represents honesty friendliness which is captured towards the end of the video. The lighter pink shade represents kindness and compassion. This conveys that not everything in life is full of despair, there are glimmers of kindness in people which gives the target audience relief.
