Mia moved from China to America and it put a lot of stress on her. Mia was shy and timid to her classmates, but in her mind she wanted to stick up for what's right.

3.She felt like she had to do everything for her family, and have the weight of the world on her shoulders.

The tip jar is an important symbol because, when the customers see the cap they will know that Mr. Yao is not there. The weeklies feel bad that Mia's family has to deal with Mr. Yao. The tip jar help Mia raise money for her to get into a writing contest.

What is something important that your character said in the first part of the book that shows who they are as a person?

On page 162, Mia says to Jason, “How does it feel to squeeze your workers for every last cent they have?” This gives me information that Mia seems to want to stick up or what's right. She came to America shy, and embarrassed about her life, (because she lived in a motel, and is very poor) ,but Mia ended up fitting in well with her class.

What were some thoughts and feelings the character had at the beginning?

Mia wanted to make the Cavalista a better and safer place for customers. She also wanted Mr. Yao to change his actions towards others and Mia’s family. This show that Mia wants to take action, while others are not.

Mr. Yao had accused Hank of stealing because he was black. That event made Mia feel empathetic toward Hank and tried to do as much as she could to help Hank and defend him.
