        The main character's name Starr, is a symbol or metaphor for the light within the darkness. Starr acts as a light or hope among her community in the novel. 
"My eyes feel like flames licked them"
Starr is talking about the riots and the teargas. The author uses a simile in comparing fire and the feeling in her eyes.

The theme explains that people are strongest when they stand together is very evident through the novel.
