Ch. 1, What is the importance of December?

Usually when people think about December they think Christmas and Other holidays, in "The Giver" December is like a ceremony for birthdays where everyone in the Utopia Jonah (Never said what the name is)lives in turns a year older. Ones get their names and a family, Eights get ribbons in their hair, Nines get their first bike, and Twelves get their assignments or jobs. After Age Twelve, age doesn't matter afterwards so after the age of twelve their wouldn't be a age ceremony for thirteen or fourteen.

The Perfect Utopia: The Apple represents the sweet moments of life combined together with a bitter core. Like the Utopia Jonah lives in, his Utopia is perfect and they have to get rid of something that's <del>very</del> not perfect, hence the bitter core.

Everything Is The Same: There are many different types of Apples in this world, but in the Utopia there is only one type of apple, which represents sameness.

Growing Up: The Apple symbolizes growth because, the seeds in the middle of the apple will eventually grow and will grow into a new apple.

The Sneetches are like groups just like in "The Giver" there are groups for ages and assignments, but, at a certain age (Age 12) there wouldn't be a group for tens or elevens etc. Just like during the end of the video, the sneetches realized that it didn't matter whether they're different or not because in the end , everyone is the same.

In Jonas' Utopia, people are not allowed to point out the difference from someone and another, they believe (what I believe they believe) that pointing out a difference from one another can make one feel bad about themselves. When a child starts having something called "Stirrings" they must report it immediately and receive medicine to cure this "Stirrings", the "stirrings" seem to be like "Puberty" but it's called "Stirrings" in Jonas' Utopia.

The Apple symbolizes growth in Jonas and everyone in the community. The apple itself cannot be perfect. The apple can rot and get bruised up but when the time is right a new apple would come and it wouldn't be bruised or rotten like the one before. The apple also symbolizes the perfect society they're in, although everything seems perfect things around them are changing and they don't even know if the world around them is changing.

The receiver has fancy furniture around the room, and has books that tower up to the ceiling. These differences show how important the job of a receiver is, and how it's honored in the community.

The process of transmitting memories is very tiring and exhausting. The first memory Jonas ever received was, the memory of Snow. Even though he didn't know what it was, he still knew from what the former receiver (Now known as "THE GIVER") had said.

I don't believe it's a good way to live, because, if they're not prepared to know other things. They wouldn't be ready for other things in life, in the future.

Ch.10 Why is Jonas surprised when The Giver turns thespeaker off and locks the door? What inferences canyou make about the privacy of normal citizens in thisworld?

Jonas was surprised when The Giver turned the speaker off and locked the doors because, in every house in the community there was no locks on doors, there was also no way people in the community can turn off their speakers, and he didn't know that there was a way someone could turn of the speaker. "Normal" citizens' (there's nobody in this world that's actually normal) can always lock doors and turn things on and off. People in the world has their own privacy while in his community only, the receiver gets this privacy.
