"'Why do you pray?' [Moishe] asked after a moment. Why did I pray? Strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breathe?  ... [Moishe] explained to me, with great emphasis, that every question possessed a power that was lost in the answer ... The real answers, Eliezer, you will find only within yourself" (5). 

This is the first conversation between Eliezer and Moishe the Beadle, who is Elie's Kabbalah mentor. The moment is significant because it shows how devoutly religous Eliezer is at the beginning of the story. He says that prayer, to him, is as essential and necessary to his life as breathing. It is also important because in this moment, Moishe teaches Elie an important lesson: to trust only in himself, and that the key to survival, the key to life, isn't inside any book or temple or rabbi, but inside of himself. Moishe pushes Eliezer to think more critically and helps his develop both mentally and spritually. 

This moment is showing that Eliezer and everyone there are being under the authority of the Germany Army and they have to do what they say like give them their gold, silver and watches or else they will be shot. This event shows that its gonna get really hard for Eliezer and he will become scared because no one wants to be shot. This moment is also important because it shows how all people are getting scared and how easy it was for the German Army to get control of them.

I anxiously thought of my father, who was at work. But i was glad nevertheless. To watch that factory go up in flames- what revenge! While we had heard some talk of German military defeats on the various fronts, we were not sure if they were credible. But today was real! We were not afraid. And yet, if a bomb had fallen on the blocks, it would have claimed hundreds of inmates lives. But we no longer feared death, in any event not this particular death. Every bomb that hit filled us with joy, gave us renewed confidence.

In this event a man was crawling to get some soup secretly but then he let out a very loud scream and i think he got shot. After that they started to hear planes and then the barrack started to shake and someone shouted that there was gonna be a bombing at Buna and Eli was scared because of his father but he was glad to watch the factory go in flames. Eli and the others were no longer scared of death but they were really happy. This event is important because it shows that Eliezer is no longer scared of death. This event changes Eli by showing how he was scared of being selected to die but now that there is a bombing hes happy and says that every bomb that hit filled them with joy.

In this event a blockalteste asked Eliezer "is this your father?" and Eli responded saying yes and that his father was sick but the blockalteste somehow convinces Eliezer that he basically shouldn't care for his father anymore because he is old and that all of the prisoners live and die alone. In this moment Eliezer realizes that he shouldn't help his father anymore and just let him die because he can't do anything for him anymore not even the doctor can. This event changes Eliezer by changing his mind and not caring for his father anymore and being like the other kids that leave their fathers behind because they are old and sick.
