#1 Watch every frame of raw footage at least twice. Then start.

An editor should watch every footage at least twice. The first time is to gain a better understanding of the entire film and storyline. It is to immerse yourself into the footage and start the gain a rough idea of which footage is optimal and which is not. The second time is when you start making notes. You start to analyse the value of each footage and decide how to edit the footage. It is crucial for the editor to do this because they need to have an understanding of the entire film in order to input their creativity and judgement. Editing the whole thing without prior knowledge is like going into an examination without studying for it, you will have no idea what the context of the film is aside from the director's and screenwriter's input.

#2 Nurture the relationship with the director. It's sacred.

The relationship between an editor and the director is very important. An editor must be capable of empathising with the director's creative mindset in order to make the final result appear smooth and harmonious. If not, the two different styles of the editor and the director may be very confusing or inconsistent for the audience to watch. An editor would also need to be very patient over the director's decisions. Most of the time, they are very commanding which may hurt the pride of the editor. But it is important for the editor to follow along the director's wishes to make a good film and only provide their perspective when necessary.

#3 Find any shot instantly. Organisation is paramount.

An editor must be well-aware of where every footage is. If the director asks them to go to a specific footage, the editor must be able to head there very quickly. Having disorganised work can be detrimental to the editing process and make it inefficient. thus making organisation crucial in editing.

#4 Factor in extra time for renders, exports, errors & crashes.

It is best to be well-prepared for the worst case scenario. There are times where rendering may take an extremely long time before finishing or an unexpected error occur or files to be corrupted which may cause lost of progress. As such, it is important for editors to take into consideration for errors, crashes, exports, and rendering duration in the editing process so that they can properly manage their time to edit the video.

#5 Attempt edits that shouldn't work. You'll be surprised.

Be open-minded and try out new styles. You might not be able to visualise the entire footage in a different style or way. It might even improve the visual effects and match the atmosphere of the scene even better. There is no harm in trying a different style for a short period of time, and if the editor finds it unsuitable, they can always change it back.

#6 Spend more time on audio. It's the glue of your edit.

In most cases, the audio is one of, if not the most important factor in the scene. While the footage provides the base visuals of the situation of the scene, the audio can greatly enhance the ambience and atmosphere of the scene. Like in horror movies where the sound in incredibly crucial to truly bring the horror of the scene. Without it, the scene may appear to be more comedic because of the weird poses, actions, and facial expressions.

#7 Cut for the scene, but always in the context of the whole film.

Editors should keep in mind that every edit they make to a specific footage will affect the entire film. Consequently, it is important for the editor to keep in mind about the film while editing a particular section of it. For example, if an editor decides to go for a different style for a particular section of the film, it would cause it to be inconsistent with the rest of the film and make it unharmonious.

1. Watch Every Frame of Raw Footage (Twice)

• Watch all footage in real time — no fast-forwarding.

• First viewing: absorb it emotionally.

• Second viewing: take notes, mark key moments.

• Knowing every frame helps you understand the story, avoid cutting yourself into a corner, and respect everyone’s work.

2. Nurture the Relationship with the Director

• The editor–director relationship is sacred and collaborative.

• Stay positive, calm, and solution-oriented

• Understand the intent and tone early (ask for references and film examples).

3. Organization Is Paramount

• Build a clear and consistent workflow — you should find any shot instantly.

• Proper organization at the start saves huge time later, especially when fatigued.

4. Factor in Extra Time for Renders, Errors, and Crashes

• Always expect technical issues.

• Start renders and exports early — don’t assume they’ll go smoothly.

• Late or broken exports can cost screenings or credibility — plan buffer time.

5.

Watch the footages twice. Once to check, the other for clarity and reference. Don't always rely on the best take, there may be a shot in a bad take that can be used.

Build a good relationship with the director. They have the vision of the movie, you have the skills to shape it.

Keep shots organised. Make it so that it is always easy to access immediately otherwise time will be wasted.

Extra time should be planned for unexpected circumstances like errors and crashes and for long time processes lilke exports and renders

Attempt different editing ideas. Sometimes the best in theory may not be the best in practice, always experiment with new styles and see which is best for the film

Take extra care in audio of the film. The audio is what gives immersion for the film, use it and shape it so the film may have life.

Edit with the context of the film.
