Our first impression is that it is crazy to see the difference on how they look and the number of players there are. We feel that image looks goofy compared to our team today. This image triggers many questions, for example, were there any cuts on the team, were the rules different, and how well did they do.

The game of basketball was a different game in that time. For example, in current basketball rules, a player must continually dribble without picking the ball up or touching it with two hands. In contrast, in 1909, players could not continuously dribble. Instead, the players needed to bounce it once, pick the ball up, and bounce it again. In that time, college athletics were largely disconnected compared to current, centralized athletic organizations such as the NCAA. In this time, women’s sports were not recognized nor emphasized as they are starting to be recognized today. Oddly enough, the women’s basketball team was founded in 1902 whereas the men’s team was founded in 1904. As a whole, the Utah State Athletics program was largely undeveloped.

This image argues that athletics are deeply engrained in college society. One thing we would have liked to learn more is what happened to the women's basketball team if they started in 1902 and the mens didn't start until 1904. We can find out what happened to the women's team by researching it. We learned that college culture is constantly evolving based on current culture and trends.
