These people believed that things such as alcohol,&nbsp; certain foods and certain customs were causes for "social ill".          <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Recent convert</li><li>Claimed to be visited by the angel Moroni<ul><li>Moroni led Smith to golden tablets near his home</li></ul></li><li>Written on the tablets was <em>The Book of Mormon</em><ul><li>Here the church is described as “one” and a “lost tribe of Israel”</li></ul></li><li>The Book predicted when an American prophet would come and establish a new and pure kingdom of Christ</li><li>In 1830 Smith published his book and later founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints<ul><li>Also known as the Mormons</li></ul></li><li>Many people joined in attempts to escape social disorder, commercial degradation of the 1830’s, and religious impurity</li><li>Started in Ohio, then moved to Missouri, and eventually moved back to Illinois&nbsp;<ul><li>Migrations were often faced with persecution, ridicule, and violence</li><li>Converts even included those from England and Northern Europe&nbsp;</li><li>By mid-1840’s Nauvoo, Illinois, was the showplace of Mormonism</li></ul></li><li>Smith petitioned Congress for serparate territorial status<ul><li>He even ran for presidency in 1844</li><li>This caused locals to imprison him for breaking local laws and eventually murder him</li></ul></li></ul><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

They believed that they could achieve this goal by creating an joining social reform societies. These societies focused on tackling issues such as slavery, drinking, diet and health, sexuality, treatment of the mentally ill and other social outcasts, and the rights of workers and men. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>It is believed by the mormon faith that to become a good, faithful mormon, you must follow their rules, many of which evolved from these societies. Although their goal was to spread their religion across the country, not everyone wanted to abide by these rules. A very large percent of the mormon population&nbsp;lived in the Utah Territory and its surrounding areas. In these areas, these reforms were pretty well instituted however this was not the case for the whole country.</div>]]></description>
