The author, with this singular quote and throughout the story makes it so that we feel empathy towards Darrow, towards his people and towards Darrows situation. We can recollect that Darrow is hurting on the inside, he has to do what others wouldn't. Darrow is fighting this new person he has to be and the person he has become. To purelly slaughter which isn't him. The theme of the story goes "A society built on lies will be damned to the truth." A quote to support this theme is said by the character Dancer, "This is not the Mars they show us on the HC. This is not a place unfit for man. It is a place of lies, wealth and immense abundance." this shows that this social hierarchy, this society was built from the ground up on lies and they are swimming in wealth. A character Titus is reaveled to be a red through his words or "slang". "You're just a boy with a slingBlade." " I killed the bloodydamn monsters. Now their daughters bloodywell get what she got."
