Statement of concerns around online learning and support.

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the limited online lectures and teaching provided by the university. While I understand that staffing levels may be challenging, I believe this should not compromise our learning experience. Adequate support should be implemented to address any potential shortcomings.

The lack of guidance and support for the upcoming RAD1002 assignment is a significant concern. If they were willing to extend the formative I do not understand why they haven’t done the same for the Summative. Our cohort has not had any RAD1002 online lectures since the 17th of June, which is not good enough.

I appreciate that the majority of the university has closed for the end of the academic year, however, this timing is particularly detrimental to our cohort as we are entering a period of increased workload with numerous assessments and deadlines. The closure of essential resources such as Studiosity puts us at a significant disadvantage and this should be addressed.

Also the inconsistency in study time allocation across different trusts creates an unfair learning environment. Some apprentices are afforded more time to study than others, depending on their trust. To ensure equality and fairness, the university should implement a standardised study time policy for all apprentices across different trusts.

Additionally, the ELE tasks are significantly more time-consuming than indicated. (1 day a week is no way near enough time!) This leads to constant challenges in keeping up with the workload.

I urge the university to prioritise student support and ensure that all students have equal opportunities to succeed.

Course feedback

The tasks being set are not doable even to a bare minimum within the time allocated (50 + 50 +30 + worksheets does not make 2 hours so I don't know where they are coming from). The worksheets in 1001 have not been updated to reflect the edition we have been given of the workbook. Also, great as it is, some of it is just a colouring activity and it is not relaxing because I am always thinking of the work I could and should be doing instead. I do really like the workbook but they should be monitoring the workload. It does not take just 20 minutes to read an academic chapter!

As previously mentioned, this is coming up to an incredibly busy time of year for us and I cannot keep on top of the workload without working late into the night which is not something I can maintain for long. It would be gracious of them to consider the implications of the work they are setting- Is it actually relevant? Will it help us moving forward? Is it updated and up to date?

I have also struggled with the replies that have been given to queries (and even lack of). I think some of them seem rude, dismissive and unhelpful. I do not feel able to question anything and that hinders learning significantly.

As for the assignments, I am only ok with 1003 and that is because Liliana does deserve a shout out for being proactive, supportive, encouraging and approachable.

The University could not foresee the staffing problems with 1002 but they have impacted our learning and nothing has been done to address this.

I feel like at best I can hope to scrape a pass and maybe second year will be better?

Feedback from 2R23 apprentice

I’ve really enjoyed the course so far. It’s been a great balance between webinars, online learning and workplace learning. The webinars, by all the lecturers, have been engaging and informative.

Robyn has been fab and consistently friendly, informative and supportive while I’ve navigated the first year. I really appreciate her unwavering support and sensible advice and also patiently reminding me of what I should be doing on one file and directed me to studyzone etc I feel like there has been support available when I’ve needed it, especially through studyzone and the library team with my (previously non existent) academic writing skills!

The design of the course with less webinars over summer and autumn has been great. It has really suited me and given me the breathing space I needed! It’s enabled me to do some self led study in areas that especially interest me and catch up in other areas, but most importantly given me the headspace to concentrate on preparing and working on my assignments and exams, and use this process to really solidify my learning.

I think the assignments and exams are brilliantly thought out. The webinar about the critical appraisal assignment by Mike and Charliegh was ace. I loved that it was closer to the deadline so it was fresh in my mind and I could apply it to my assignment. Lilianas webinars on assessments have also been great, really informative and clarified what to expect. Julie’s webinars and the formative image evaluation presentation have been ace at getting my brain engaged in the process of verbalising all my thought processes ready for my SOAP and a timely kick up the arse to start thinking about the case study. So far the assessment process has really solidified my learning with the added pressure to really learn it!

I’ve found the amount of weekly online learning is unsustainable if I try and learn it properly (way way over my off the job time). I now just skim read over stuff to get it done and hope the assessments and future learning will solidify it.

I find ELE2 hard to navigate and I really really would love the webinar title on the timetables entry. Or a clearer way on ELE2 to put a list of webinars and the dates/times. I am still going into webinars not knowing which one it is. I would love to be able to prepare for them to make the most of them.

I don’t think I can state enough how good the assessment design is, relevant, purposeful and a great learning opportunity. The preparation from all the module leads has been really explicit on what we need to do and expect. (I really hate assessments etc so I really appreciate it) I feel the course so far has given me the knowledge and grounding to make the most of my workplace learning and has initiated my enthusiasm to really look into current work practices and new research in the field. Big thanks to all the Exeter team.

Overwhelmed by RAD1001 and RAD1002 Coursework!!

I'm really struggling with the university side of things right now. I'm finding the RAD1001 physics material overwhelming, and it's the same with RAD1002. There doesn't seem to be much support available, even though I'm really trying to stay on top of everything in RA1001. It just feels like too much information to process, and I don't feel like I'm actually learning anything. It sticks in my head for a little while, but when I try to revisit it after a few days or weeks, it's like I don't remember any of it.

When it comes to progress tests, I feel completely lost, like I haven't learned anything at all. The 3rd formative was especially tough – I felt so dumb and clueless. The frustrating thing is that I seem to be scoring better on the second and third-year clinical scenario questions than on the material we're supposed to be learning in year 1 from weekly tasks or anything related to RAD1001. It's just all so hard and overwhelming, and I feel like I'm not making progress.

Feedback (apologies for the length)

I'm struggling to keep up with the weekly tasks within 1001 and 1002, there is nowhere near enough time to get this stuff embedded into my brain. I find the multitude of topics difficult to retain especially as they go into so much depth and sometimes seem unnecessary and a bit overkill. I feel like it's stuff you'd need to learn if you were training to be a doctor but would have 7 years to learn instead of just 3. Considering we need to learn other modalities too, I am worried it's too much to fit in and I also feel like I'm wasting my time learning how a corpus luteum is formed as I will forget this in a months time. I feel we would benefit with in depth radiology based biology, anatomy and physics. Learning about the legislation and laws surrounding radiation is also a massive part and I feel we have barely touched upon this. I understand there have been massive staffing issues and appreciate all the efforts to fill in and try cover topics that typically don't belong to tutors. Fiona is a superwoman and she is doing absolutely amazing considering the circumstances but I don't want her to sacrifice years off her life trying to help us!

I'm finding most of the 1003 and 4 worksheets complicated too. They repeat themselves, they aren't easy to read and there is not enough room to write what you need in the boxes/space underneath the questions and I don't have time to create space before printing them all off. Really struggling with these. Also radiographers can be pretty terrible at answering/ helping us answer these questions as they have no idea themselves/ have forgotten since their uni days.

Radiographer feedback sheet isn't great either, it needs a 1-5 score section. There should be at least one more step between 'sometimes' and 'consistent'.

On a positive note when we do have lectures they are a great help, would love to have more.

Can Simon do a pre-test pep talk for the summative? he calms so many of us.

On another note, there are some spelling mistakes in the test that throws you off a little, but that's more of a bug than real problem.
